Blast from the past? I assume you know Ginger? We were very close in high school. She drove a badass red 300 Nissan ZX. Awesome drives, awesome car. Her boyfriend, Ken, at the the time gave her a de-scented striped skunk for a birthday gift. After a few weeks, the charm wore off and I ended up taking care of the skunk. Shortly after, Ken was killed in a DUI accident coming back from the Lake. That kind of shite in high school leaves memories and scars.

Ginger is now a best-selling author on parenting and a motivational speaker. We stay in touch from time to time. I was born and raised in Auburn and have eaten more than my share of BBQ. The BBQ House and Chuck's have always been staples.

Jeff Price with Mom at Tenda Chick. I used to live at Courtyard Apts. next to the BBQ house. Mom was always worried that I wasn't eating well enough (she was right), so she went to Jeff and asked him to run me a 100$ monthly tab. I still don't know what the secret was, but the BBQ House's BLT was always PERFECT. So simple, so perfect, so delicious. Try as I might, I can never replicate it. The BBQ House had awesome breakfasts. I grew up there, with Dad and friends teaching across the street at Funchess for decades.

My elder sister helped start up Pike Road and taught Jeff's grandson. Not a small world, really. Auburn Family.

Thanks for listening. War Eagle.

John

If I must dare to exist in Jiro's world, as a mouse in a corner, I would want to know how in the world does one de-scent a skunk.

And are these sentences connected at all or are you telling us about all the loved ones in your life?

Good morning, Mr. Jangalang. War Eagle.

The skunk was bought at a pet store. There are scent glands just inside the anus that can be easily removed by a vet. Skunks tend to make interesting pets with the right owner. I have had two - One, domestically bred and de-scented, and the other, a spotted skunk that I caught in a steel trap baited with sardines, that I managed to free and nurse back to health without being sprayed before he / she escaped its pen. FTR, I always wanted a baby raccoon to raise but never had the chance. I had flying squirrels, gray squirrels, chipmunks, etc.

As to your 2nd question... why? It's just a story / anecdote that lots of Auburn people would understand. How about sharing some of yours? NM.

I used to eat at the BBQ House. It was a nice change from the macaroni and cheese, canned peaches, and fish sticks that I ate in the cafeteria.

If you don't know anything about Chuck's and the BBQ House, then, you need to pull more weight bra. Or better yet, just shut up and listen, and learn. President Lincoln's advice that you still won't take.

Well done, Jang san. Progress. Baby steps are fine, and War Damn Eagle. BTW, next time you are in Opelika / Auburn, if you haven't had Chuck's BBQ, I will recommend it. Others may have different opinions and that's fine. Lots of BBQ places have come and gone. The BBQ House stands out and above the rest, for the food, tradition, proximity to campus, etc. Todd Blackledge stopped by many times, but Auburn just keeps growing, and even Jeff, a family friend / Auburn staple for decades held out as long as he could or wished to. Progress...I guess. But Chuck's is still pretty good BBQ. Waiting on Leto to check in.

Hey, have an upvote. Is it just you or your generation who punctuates every other word with gross or weirdo? It's a serious, want to know the answer question. Please be more specific. Please define weird / weirdo / gross or better choose your words to convey your intention. Gross, weirdo....says lots of nothing.

I'm not mad at all. Have a great day Jang san. LSU HATE WEEK. Hit tRant bra and do us proud!

Good thread, been eating BBQ in Auburn/Opelika for over 30 years.

- BBQ house was great, sad they are gone
- Chuck’s is reliable for a chipped sandwich
- Country’s was good early on
- Mike and Ed’s by the railroad tracks was good, victim of Covid hysteria times
- Butcher Paper is my new go-to, their brisket sandwich with hot sauce is the best

(When in Birmingham I go to Saw’s, their ribs are the best)

You can de-scent a skunk, but it’s still going to smell awful. Hell no.

I worked at Chucks my junior year.

Good story. I had gone to rodeo and got the worst sunburn of my life. I was red as a lobster. It was bad. Few days later I’m working at Chucks. It was slow and on the TV in the dining room, the Waco siege on the Koresh compound was happening.

So, I have the worst sunburn you can imagine, the bbq pit is going strong right behind me, and the Waco compound is burning up on TV.

I thought I was in hell.

I still have no clue how he managed to shift from a DUI death to an independent story of a BBQ restaurant that still brings up the goosebumps. I am starting to think he got laid by the woman w/the 70's hair at this restauraunt.

I’ve been doing the same for more than 50 years, and your list covers MOST of the best “Q” in the confines of Lee County…

However?…in the “Gone-But-Not-Forgotten” category…that was as good as any you listed (and better than some others)…your list isn’t FULLY comprehensive, Fly-Down, unless you include the Pig Squeal in Waverly.

Without any knowledge AT ALL of the exact technicalities of the procedure, my gut instinct tells me…whatever you precisely have to do?

You do it veryveryVERY cautiously
