Growing up we had country - brown gravy and usually with rice
That said, I do think the terms are sometimes (and I suppose erroneously) used interchangeably, and growing up "country" was the term here (Deep South) and "chicken fried" was the generic term in places like Texas.

quote:Can't speak to what was done in points East, but the only time you saw the term "Country Fried Steak" in Texas was from chain restaurants, serving breaded cutlet with mashed potatoes and cream gravy, who seemed to be fearful that their non-Texan customers would be confused about what this menu item actually was.

Go watch the 1971 film "The Last Picture Show," where Ben Johnson's character, Sam the Lion, tells the waitress at the diner, "Chicken fry me a steak and try to use meat this time!"
