...and I'd like to ask him if his blog has aged as well as his wine?

Kirby Smart: No head coaching experience... and in fact, no offensive coaching experience at all other than a 1-year stint as UGA's running backs coach in 2005. Yeah, he's Nick Saban's right hand man, and if you want to go ahead and advocate that we hire what would be UGA's version of Will Muschamp... well, then go right ahead.

Just wet my palette with his wine. It tastes very bitter.

I was an anti-Kirby troll in 2016 too. Especially after losing to Hugh freeze and ole miss that year.

I always thought Kirby would be a good coach.
But I remember lakenormandawg saying that Kirby would never coach at Georgia again after he took that raise as Bama DC before the 2014 season (leveraging our offer to do so). I was kind of sold on that argument at the time.

Weren't you wayxmafia on the old DawgRant?
A lot of people couldn't see the forest for the trees in 2016. I wasn't, necessarily, convinced that Kirby was the one that would lead us into the promised land, but I was always 100% convinced that he was, at least, our Moses, and would set us on the path. Richt, for whatever reason, inspired adulation from a large segment of our base, but seemed to struggle with inspiring our boosters and administration, much like a CEO has to inspire shareholders and the board. Kirby came in with the hot hand, in that regard, and was the right coach at the right time to lay out the foundation for a program that, at the very least, would be in better shape than the one he walked into.
I'm watching Cristobal do the same for Miami. Am I convinced that Cristobal can lead Miami back to the promised land? No. But, he has jump started the administration and boosters, and has them doing all the things that need to be done to have a successful program moving forward. He is the right coach at the right time. Ultimately, however, as with all coaches, he will be judged by his on field results.
2016 was a funny year. The Richt "miss me yet" memes, the the failure to acknowledge the roster depth issues that Kirby walked into, various players basically half-assing it and Kirby threatening to lose with players who want to be at UGA, rather than playing those who did not.
Then 2017 happened, and no one was more surprised than me, to get those results that early.
It also ended the Richt trolls from within the fanbase. And let's be honest, here: the trolls came from a place of love for Richt, rather than hatred for Kirby. A significant portion of the base was waiting for their "I told you so" moment.
Thankfully, they never got it.

I was told by people in Bainbridge that knew Kirby and his family that he would never coach for Richt, specifically, again while Richt was trying to bring him in as DC. Maybe lakenormandawg had heard the same and just misinterpreted it .
The problem that a lot of people had with the prospect of firing Richt was "who can we bring in that is better than Richt"? We were a slave to his "success", always gazing at the stars but too afraid to jump on the rocket to fly amongst them.
Frustrating, yet understandable. Firing a legend is a risky proposition, but great things generally can only come from great sacrifice, or so I've been told.

What was stateline's take on firing Richt and hiring Kirby? I'm sad that I never got to hear it.

Yeah I think deep down it was a Richt thing...but i was pissed cause we had just won 10 games and then lost to vandy, tech, and got blown out by Ole Miss. Definitely wasn't looking at the bigger picture.
And yeah that was me on old rant

If I remember my mood correctly I was not anti-Smart as I was just against firing Richt.

Just to pick your brain a bit (as I was pro firing Richt for a long time) did you ever have any kind of doubts about Richt which led you to think that, maybe, a coaching change would be in order? For me, my gripe was his cyclic inattention to positional needs with recruiting, and some of his coaching hires. His stubborn refusal to fire Willie Martinez was simply inexcusable and very Bowden-esque, as the end of Bobby's career was hastened by his refusal to fire his son as OC.
I just know that I ate a lot of shite for my unpopular opinion on Richt, maybe rightfully so, but the shite usually was due to the uncertainty of making a home run hire...

He said Kirby would win 6 national titles. State was a huge Kirby fan after his 1st SEC Media days when he expressed the need for “dudes” on the LOS.

Some of my fondest memories of the early DawgRant was when Wes and Stateline would declare that they were glad we lost so they could go sit in a deer stand on Saturday morning.
Glad to see he found some excitement with the program.
I'm not sure if I saw 6 NC's coming, but I certainly was excited to hear Kirby acknowledge the lack of depth there.

Yes… a lot of hunting during those years. 2017 was devastating for him though. That was around the time he got diagnosed too…. He found peace that I was in a good spot with Kirby and co. moving forward with or without him

Several of things you mentioned also pissed me off especially the Martinez crap.
I would say I was for retaining him out of fear. Tenner, Auburn, Florida, etc... were are in a cycle of making bad HC hires and I was afraid we would hop on that same carousel of shite by firing a 10 win/season HC.

I was ready to see CMR go, great guy but he seemed to lose the fire necessary to be great.
Was awesome recruiting skill position players but OL/DL recruiting was so hit n miss. Lost so many big games in a frustrating manner and Willie and Grantham, Oh Lawd...
Will admit tho that I wanted to keep Donnan another year so I was dead wrong there.

Well, I liked Donnan (I mean, he wasn't Goff), but after that shite show of a final year and the Quincy Carter finger/cocaine bullshite, it was fairly obvious that his team was spiralling. I was okay with his firing, if not certain it was the right move.

Ever wonder why he never coached again?
