The problem is that Napier has been lost on game management since he has been here. You would swear we don't even have a 2 minute offense when trailing late in games.

He isn't an on the field coach though is he? I think other coaches have that responsibility on the field with the players which may be leading to the screw ups. If true I blame Napier for thinking that was a wise move.

I think one of the OL coaches should be responsible for ST play. Make Stapleton (or fire him and replace him with someone who could recruit OL well) and have them be ST coach?

I feel that is in part because he's laying in a lot of new systems and processes, but also is wearing too many hats.

I think he is rumored to being open to hiring an OC depending on how this season plays out.

I never followed Clemson close, but wasn't Scott a decent OC there?

At least Billy isn't friends with Chad Morris

They did good but it was a strange setup where Scott called the passing plays and the other guy called the running plays. I guess Dabo decided which type of play he wanted but not sure exactly how they ran that system.

Also, I really hope Napier's offense comes together as he envisioned.

So far, it's been a rough transition. But I agree with you that it isn't as bad has some of his biggest detractors would indicate. It's not a flashy offense, but it does seem to get the ball across the goal line at times. That's all I care about.

I think it is kind of bad unless you can have old Bama and Georgia O lines etc. Even Saban opened up more than this when he saw things changing. Not enough intermediate passing to keep defenses more honest. I never watched much LA film but remember his detractors claiming that won't work good in the SEC. I think he generated offense there by having a dominant O line for that conference and good RBs.

So was Billy, set a school scoring record at the time

That said, his buddy while at USF didn’t exactly light it up.

I’m holding out hope as the OL and young WRs gain exp we’ll see it start to take shape

I mean, I'd prefer Billy to work as HC/OC.

But if not, I don't think Scott being hired with play calling/ working with qbs would be the worst thing that could happen to UF.

I hope he steps down as play caller because we know what he wants to run and its a little outdated now I think. He wants to pound you running it with a real conservative passing game taking just a couple of deep shots a game. I have never seen someone run it on as much on 3rd and 6+ yards as him in recent memory. Maybe he will surprise me in this game though.

Shane Matthews is the answer, he needs to be the OC at UF.
He has experience, all be it at the high school level, and has a lot of Steve Spurrier in him. I really enjoy listening to his podcasts and I am always impressed by his football knowledge.

And he is 100% Gator!

Matthews would be really good IMO but he wants to golf and do the podcast thing with minimal commitments. You can tell by the way he talks about college athletes these days and the coaches that he doesn’t want to deal with the shite era of college players.

Not Qb / OC material unless he is suiting up.

Strength and motivational coach maybe.

Another former Gator that would be a great OC is Brian Schottenheimer. Again, and there may be a pattern here, Spurrier player.

Overall, need to see more of Billy’s guys on offense that his staff has recruited. I’m not really talking about portal guys either because I personally don’t believe that’s how you sustain a program. We need to run more 10 personnel and be better at reading the box, spreading out the defense. These are really my lone gripes on offense. They can be easily corrected too, giving it time on my end.

So many teams have improved themselves by the portal its almost proven now its a big part of the overall deal. Heck how many portal starters do we have? Like 6 or 7 and FSU this season and TCU last season were playoff contenders because of the portal. I think Bama even had 4 portal starters last season despite their great recruiting classes.
