Thorpe was a good athlete but did ever face African American athletes? His achievements happened during segregation.

I must point out that Jesse Owens didn't see a lot of other African American athletes during his time either. Peacock and Metcalf were really good but he was mostly competing against White dudes.

Probably the main thing to consider is that the caliber of athlete between 1912 and 1936 really improved as far as the Olympics were concerned.

He won both the Pentathlon and the Decathlon in the same Olympics. That has never been done by anyone else in history.

Jesse Owens won the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and long jump in '36
Carl Lewis won the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and long jump in '84.

So, Thorpe did something that has never been done since by any athlete in the world. Owens did something that another US athlete did.

Thorpe nor Owens could choose who they competed against. If you want to play the cross-era game...

Jesse Owen's Personal Best:
100 meter: 10.2
200 Meter: 20.7

Justin Gatlin (Tennessee) Personal Best:
100 meter: 9.74
200 meter: 19.74
