I can't for the life of me understand our 1941 claim either. We claim 1941
The story goes that Bama’s AD or SID in the 1980s wanted to claim more titles than Notre Dame had so they needed to get to 11 to do that. They actually only had six so they had to go retroactively claim 5 more.
1977 was too fresh so they picked 1941 along with 4 pre-AP era years because they knew their fans were too stupid to question anything.

Problem is a bunch of other schools started retroactively claiming "titles" too (including Notre Dame). Michigan claims 11 but only 2 are AP or Coaches.

I remember Sports Ilistrated coming out with an article after the bowls making a good case for Auburn. Wonder if it can be found online.

If you look at those early claims objectively and look at how the 1925, 1926, and 1930 Alabama teams and how they absolutely dominated their opponents I don't see how you can say those are ridiculous claims while simultaneously making the claim that 1925 Dartmouth, 1926 Stanford, and 1930 Notre Dame were clearly better. That's not to say those other teams didn't have legitimate claims too but to argue one claim is clearly better than the other is disingenuous.

This coming from the fanbase of geniuses that throw toilet paper to celebrate literally anything.
