We all have seasons from the pre-BCS era where we feel hosed. That fact makes us deciding to pick 1941 as the random non-AP/Coaches title in our bag to claim utterly baffling.

I can't for the life of me understand our 1941 claim either. We claim 1941...a year we barely finished in the Top 20 in some polls instead of 1945...a year we went undefeated outscoring our regular season opponents 396-66 before beating USC 34-14 in the Rose Bowl. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever

Even more perplexing since it was Minnesota who originally finished #1 in Deke Houlgate's math rating but he retroactively included bowl results years later.

You could pick 10 other seasons that make more sense than that if you just wanted to randomly pick another one as a national title (and could have in 1980s when we did it) (would have still been embarrassing).

Completely ridiculous.

The story goes that Bama’s AD or SID in the 1980s wanted to claim more titles than Notre Dame had so they needed to get to 11 to do that. They actually only had six so they had to go retroactively claim 5 more.

1977 was too fresh so they picked 1941 along with 4 pre-AP era years because they knew their fans were too stupid to question anything.
