Per Brett McMurphy.

Also must play 1 OOC Power 5 Team.

Money is ruining the sport. Their TV contract is only prorated for 8 SEC games. So instead of going with a 9 game conference schedule, that makes way more sense and let's the traditional rivals play every year, we get this stupid shite.

Schedules to be revealed on June 14th

So is it a 7-1 next season or a 6-2, losing the Auburn game with the 7-1?

Apparently it's not a 1-7 thing. Totally random schedule from what I see on twitter. Schedules to be announced on June 14th Probably shopping the rights to make that into a hour long program on a network.

For a conference with so much on field success, the decision making at the top is consistently baffling.

Sankey said they’re going to ‘honor traditional rivalries’ but not holding my breath on that.

Sport is becoming less and less interesting aside from the joy of watching UGA dominate.

Have been pretty neutral on Sankey, but he dropped the ball here. Only getting the TV contract locked in for league 8 games with no clause to adjust that number if the league expanded ( when the expansion talks were probably happening at the same time) is pretty fricking inept.

If it's only for '24 while they work on the '25 schedule, no doubt they'll work around UGA/UF, UGA/AU, AU/UA, UA/UT, OM/MSU to keep the rivalries going...

After '24 who the frick knows

Not sure those games are guaranteed for 2024. If they were, I think they would have said as much in the release. The way I took it the schedules will be totally random.

Im not sure when the current TV deal ends but if ESPN doesn't want to renegotiate the SEC won't go to 9 games. Which sucks for us.

So what if we don't draw Florida? The city of Jacksonville will not get all their precious millions, but I'm sure the powers that be will make sure that Georga has Florida and Auburn. I really wish conferences would go more regional, but too late for all that.

Florida and Auburn ain’t going nowhere. Tenn is on the outs. We will be seeing LSU and Texas in 2025.

You do realize that taking 2 OOC games and merging them into one usually loses a game of content for ESPN.
A 16 team league is probably losing 8 games of content with a 9th conference game.

That doesn't help the argument for more money when only the top 4 or 5 teams garner national interest when they play each other (i.e. Bama vs UGA moves the needle. Bama vs 13 other teams does not).

That's fine for UGA, UF, UK, USC, because it is already built into the schedule.

For those SEC teams that don't already have that built into the schedule, what kind of last minute clusterfrick is this?

This is a shakedown by Sankey on ESPN.

Sankey did apparently say that the UF game and AU games (along with other rivalries) would be respected so I guess they are going to commit to those games in 2024

This is just a stop gap. Let OU UTx come in. Get rid of divisions. 12 team playoffs. New SEC Championship selection process.

That is already a lot of damn change.

From an Emerson Athletic article

quote:

“Look, over time nobody’s shying away from anything. We just didn’t add another game during a period of transition,” Sankey said. “If you’re that impatient, I’m glad you’re not leading a conference.”

Keeping eight games in 2024 is more a reflection of not having the votes to go to nine, sources in the conference said, and holding out hope that a deal can be struck with ESPN to increase the payout to the SEC in exchange for going to nine.

In the meantime, the 2024 schedule is a stopgap. The exact matchups will be revealed on June 14 in an SEC Network special. It will preserve traditional rivalries, Sankey said.

He didn’t confirm whether that means Texas and Texas A&M will meet in 2024, along with Auburn–Georgia and Alabama–Tennessee, but strongly hinted at it.

“We’re going to honor our traditional rivalries and our traditional games,” Sankey said. “We understand priorities in here.”

That's positive, but I'm still nervous. It is extremely, entirely possible that his quote means that we'll have essnetially a 1-7 model, which DOES "presreve traditional rivalries" just not necessarily all of them. I mean yeah we'd have bama/auburn and uga/uf which "honors traditional games" but what is their incentive to go above and beyond that? We have 2 games that must/should be preserve at any and all costs, but some schools like an arkansas for instance dont' really have any. are they really going to take the time to perfectly craft and fin tune each team's schedule like that?

I just don't know. I have a sinking feeling they're going to assign each team one absolute lock of a game (for us it'd be uf) then just throw shite at the wall from there and see what happeens.

They owe us for when we got fricked playing at Auburn twice.

Watch them frick us again while AU gets an easy schedule with all home games or something.

If mcgarity was here I would expect us to play @AU this year as scheduled, have them drop off the schedule in 2024, then pick back up annually in 2025 starting @ AU again.
