does he drop in your ranking of coaches in the SEC or does his legacy of long ago keep him among the top three or four?

Best SEC coach currently coaching or of all time? Currently, hell no. Of all time... Top 5 still.

He doesn't really drop... he's at South Carolina, and has done okay, considering they have had no success historically. It must have killed him to lose there that way, but he has to respect Meyer, because that's exactly what he would have done.

He made his legacy at Florida. If he goes to UT he will have them back at the top quickly

He has no leadership. No QB, No Speed. His offense will only work w/ the right players. That school may never have the players...

UF NEVER EVEN WON AN SEC CHAMPIONSHIP PRIOR TO SPURRIER. With SOS as coach, they won SIX !!!

UF NEVER WON A HEISMAN PRIOR TO SPURRIER----- either?.

He won a Heisman as a player at Florida. I'm not sure if he was the first player to ever win one.

To answer your question, yes there was a Heisman won by a Florida player prior to him arriving as a coach, and it happened to be him (and maybe another too).

Granny did better at USC than SOS has and Granny took over a much worse situation.

Spurrier was a very good coach in a less competitive SEC in the 90's.

He'll never have better talent than the other team 95% of the time in Carolina like he did in Florida and the SEC is a better overall conference now than it was in his heydey.

Based on that premise, Fulmer would be ahead of Richt.

So 10 yrs ago he was the best coach in college football when he was whipping everybody right, but now he's at a school where its a lot tougher to recruit top talent and he's not winning 10 or 11 games a year, so now he's not a good coach anymore? Does that sum it up? He must have forgotten all that football he used to know. Fact is, he hasn't had a QB anywhere near as good as the ones he had at Florida, and that is the difference between South Carolina winning 10 games, or winning 7 games.

Eh, sorta. A lot depends on the boosters, for once. LSU for many years was thought to be a great opportunity, but it wasn't until the boosters poured in the money that BR had a title contender. The best coach in the world won't recruit well if he can't brag about his top-notch facilities and everything else he can offer to a 5-star prospect.

That said, a good coach can make the most of what the boosters give him. There are many factors in play here.
