I'm just reading the news here in Southern California this morning about the horrible weather in Arkansas and several other states....said over 600 killed in Arkansas....that's incredible!

Our prayers for all of you out there! May God bless and keep all of you safe!

This report actually says, "casualties", which means deaths.

Casualties are dead and wounded.
I've seen 11 dead.

Any loss of life is terrible. That being said, 600 injured but only 5 dead is actually a rather fortunate ratio. Considering the amount injured and amount of devastation, it seems very fortunate to not have double digit deaths.

Troup County, Georgia, got slammed by an EF-3 last week. The damage is widespread and yet not a single person died. Only three or four were injured and none of the injuries were serious. When you look at the damage, it seems there should have been multiple deaths.
I spoke to a women in Griffin who lost her home in a tornado earlier this year. The entire structure was gone except one bathroom that was still intact. When they tell you to hide in an interior bathroom or closet, there's a reason.

It's always meant both wounded and dead.

Language can be funny, and meanings age over time.

Decimated means reduced by 1/10th, it's dated to Roman times. Popular understanding is "totally destroyed".

Meanings do age over time, but the current definition of decimated is, “kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage of…” . The definition related to ancient times and tied to practices of the Romans is as you describe it.

There wasn't even that many storm related deaths in the whole month of April in 2011.
