What if they're black and conservative?

O right, just run-of-the-mill Uncle Tom.

You outed yourself.

He had to notice the great Cincinnati teams led by Oscar Robertson and later Paul Hogue. I mean if George Smith and Ed Jucker saw the ability of black athletes, surely Rupp could.

He did.

Again, how old are you?

I was in Cincinnati back then and it was better but it was not without incidents either.

#1 Rupp would fail in modern recruiting. He had tryouts and sent letters for kids not in the area. If a kid did not respond to the letter Rupp dropped them. He did not travel to recruit. If you played for him you showed up or were not on the team.

#2 "Glory Road" was made for modern revisionist history. Nobody at that game saw it as "black" vs "white" as players, staff, or fans. The bigger irony is had the Duke player not been sick, they would have won and faced Texas Western, not UK

#3 The gold lighter was a gimmick for Bear to recruit in KY (and elsewhere). He and Rupp were close long after he left UK.

#4 Most of the revised history was penned in the 1980's by a guy (like a click baiter today) who made a career making stuff up and was not even around when Rupp was.

#5 Both the North and South there were places black folks just did not go. It is one thing to have a black kid on a team but entirely different to protect them traveling. Kids today have no clue what it was really like back then.

I'm not a big hockey fan but I've been to some Cyclone games and enjoyed them, the team you mentioned was before my time.

Arthur Ashe is one of my all-time favorite sports figures. More so the man and the barriers he broke than the actual sport.

I only know of one poster here that would fit that description, and I haven't seen him in a long time now that you mention it

We're talking about posters on this site specifically, 90%+ of whom are exactly what I said.

I bet you were smiling when you typed that sick gotcha moment

As the old guy, don't kid yourself. Middle age starts around 33. Late middle age is probably between 45 - 55. There is a reason most pro athletes do go past 35.

Awesome, thanks for the confirmation that I'm not yet middle aged

ETA: although, maybe I do have less than 5 years left after all

Not sure what you mean about that. Please elaborate.

He had black players on his high school teams in Kansas in the 1920s. Do some research you ignorant fool.

If he had black players in Kansas then why not at Kentucky? Was it Rupp or would you hillbillies not let him? Has to be one or the other and it looks even worse if Rupp wanted to but was not allowed.

Isn't that big tennis venue in Cincinnati named after him?

I think they are the league below IHL

If you have ever seen the movie "Slap Shot" I swear they got some of the characters from the old Cincinnati Stingers players.

If you live in Cincy, you need to get out more often. Lots of things to do there. Sucks tho when they moved Coney Island (next to the old river Downs) to wherever Kings Island is now.

More than just the Mississippi schools

When I was younger West Virginia was way more hostile than the South

In simple terms, growing up

Northerns like the race but hate the person.
Southerners hate the race but like the person.

I was at funerals in the 60's when black and white were both bawlin their eyes out when they lost a Bubba (black or white). In the North they hated the Irish the most but lots of friends up there never seemed to have a single black person they actually knew. Sorta surreal. I have been to Iowa many times and can never remember seeing a single black person there. Indiana had the biggest KKK in the history of the KKK and basketball games there were not exactly warm and cuddly when a black player was involved.

I'm talking about the relevance of our conference.

West Virginia didn't have any relevance back then and hopefully never.

Yes, DB overachieved a few times in his 28 years at LSU, but you can count them all using one hand. I remember Bobby Knight saying something like “I was worried that we were going to lose the game, then I looked over at Dale Brown and stopped worrying “

Beautiful place

Some really good people

Just some of the worst off set the good. However, in a bar fight you want a few on your side. Tough bastards and not afraid to fight dirty when needed.

Damn. I would've hated(or loved) what he would've said about Cal.

Yep, very beautiful place.

In Georgetown Kentucky, as we speak but will be heading back home tonight.
I knew of the Stingers from an old shirt a friend of mine use to wear but did not know they were a hockey team.

I haven't been to Kings Island in a few years. Loved it as a kid but not so much now. Riding the Beast and going up in the Eiffel Tower were my favs.

I've seen a couple of places with Ashe's name on them. He was a great man.

What about my boy Fess Irvin?
