You’re a smart guy SoG, so surely you don’t believe that no one thought the #3 ranked defending national champion might just win the championship

I could be totally misremembering, but I don't recall a single outlet picking them to win the national title. A few picked them to go 12-0, lose to us in Atlanta and make the playoff, but Alabama/Ohio State were almost universal picks to be the 2 best teams.

They pretty quickly jumped into the conversation and then to the front of the line within a few weeks, but the off-season was a whole lot of talk about them being talented but taking a small step back.

The players heard

“They lost 15 to the draft, they can’t be as good”

“Their best WR is now at Bama”

“They don’t have any RBs”

“Bennett can’t be relied on to win a game for you”

Then mid season they heard “UT coming to town #1 to whip your arse”

You are not wrong at all. And honestly, most UGA fans were fine with it. We were just happy to win it last year. Luckily, Kirby and the team were not.

Sure, and that was reasonable. They did take a small step back on defense, and they almost didn’t get the chance to wreck TCU if an Ohio State DB doesn’t fall down.

What didn’t happen was any prediction below serious playoff contender. That’s not disrespect on any level.
