Alabama native, known as a great recruiter, did a good job as Kentucky’s DC, and played in the SEC

This Troy defense is elite for the G5 level. They set the edge well, are rarely out of position on the back end, and are extremely physical. They’ve made one of the best G5 offenses in UTSA look pedestrian today.

With the new TV deal, we should be able to pull a sitting Sun Belt head coach. Until we got this sorry bunch of coordinators, being a coordinator under Saban almost always led to a P5 head coaching job which is where Sumrall is headed.

He’s not leaving Troy to be a DC again. He’s going to be a head coach at the power 5 level soon.

Colorado just pulled a sitting MAC head coach to be an OC. I think the growing gap in TV money will make it possible.

The last two Bama coordinators to get head coaching jobs got Texas and Tennessee. The last Troy head coach to move to the P5 got West Virginia. I’d rather take the path that leads to Texas or Tennessee.

A sitting MAC coach that wasn’t trending well.

Sumrall is really good. And won’t be at Troy much longer regardless.

I think if you look if at the most recent hiring trends, P5 coordinators at really good programs are getting better jobs than sitting G5 head coaches. The pay gap is so substantial now that it’s a bigger jump from G5 to premier P5 than it used to be.

Golding as a coordinator is probably making 50 to 100% more than Sumrall is as a head coach.

UGA, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon, Notre Dame - those are all programs capable of winning a national title that went the coordinator route.

In the current coaching carousel, only two P5 teams hired a current G5 coach - Hugh Freeze who has prior P5 experience and Luke Fickell who coached at one of the premier G5 programs.

In the last cycle, only 3 teams went with G5 coaches Florida, TCU and Washington.

In that same two-year period, 12 teams (I’m not counting Zach Arnett) went with a current P5 assistant coach.

At this point, just throw a headset on a blow up doll and it would do a better job as DC than Pete.

Anyone can beat Pete picking plays from a bingo wheel.

Hard to equate that, though. Lewis at Kent State had peaked and was trending down. This isn't the case for Sumrall.

Yes and Willie Taggart tried the same thing at Florida State and you see where he ended up (Fired) Sanders will never succeed at Colorado. He never won the Celebration Bowl. He is all publicity. Now he has Willie on his staff. Sad Puddings

That's news to me. Kent State isn't some powerhouse historically speaking.
