The first part of this definitely happened, and often, to young Irons. The second part is either made up, or he watched it happen while not participating in it, because no one but no one is running from the sexless dork trying to tell everyone about how his degree makes him better than them.

This seems very specific. This is about a particular person, isn't it? Someone who causes deep-seated feelings of jealousy and inadequacy in you. It's possible the wife in this scenario, who you seem to regard with a mix of hostility and desire, is your very own ex, taken from you by this man who makes you feel so small, while all you can do is seethe and stare at your degree on the wall, wondering why it won't protect you.
