Gus is a good guy, but he blew it coaching. He always thought his system trumps the players. He didn't worry about S&C, QB development, or a real passing game. He called the plays and limited input. He was given the perfect opportunity at Auburn and his stubbornness cost him. Now he is just working until retirement. Again, a good guy.

Yep I agree. He was too stubborn for suggestions on his play calling designs. And the S&C was really a detriment that last few years. The beginning of the end was Nik Marshall after he was gone. Couldn’t get another speedster who could run and be decent enough with the pass to keep the defenses honest

He did ok with Sean White at QB running an offense, just not his offense. Kid was smart and could throw the short pass well, just was too fragile to play in the SEC and not very fast. He had a very good team in 2017, but didn't really know how to use Stidham. Nix was supposed to be the answer, but he started from day 1 and became a head case.

I don't mean to start a whole thing here, but way back in high school I never understood why Nix was so desired as a P5 QB.
Even as a fan of another team, watching him display such poor fundamentals over and over makes me irrationally upset.
Still, watching him now on TV, I just want to reach through the screen and shake him around over his terrible footwork.

So dumb you can't even post a gif correctly. Get off the internet.

Can you imagine walking up to Gustav with your phone camera trying to scan his man-teats?

You must not have watched him in HS. He had all the tools, just needed some coaching. He carried the team on his back, and he never lost that mentality thanks to Gus. If he would have redshirted instead of starting and received coaching, he would be a great QB. Remember who else was on that team that also didn't receive coaching (Willis).

Yeah, I saw him play in person, from the sideline.
He just didn't do it for me back then, but I've been wrong plenty of times too.

His dad was literally his coach, which adds to my frustration.

You were not the only one to be frustrated by this. I talked to a former AU QB immediately after the MSU game his freshman year. Everyone thought it was the first step to greatness. It actually caused him issues the rest of his AU career, because everyone thought he was the QB they saw that night. No coaching at home or at AU. Actually, last year was his biggest improvement and that was because Harsin made sure he stayed in the pocket longer. That frustrated Nix. Now his style is a good fit for the Pac12 and their defenses.
