I agree with your general idea, but my school is probably the exception to the rule somewhat.
We’re a big school who has a big student section the covers some very very prime seating real estate.
We lose to App St and had students camping out for tickets 24 hours later. We have 30-40k in students alone at most games. Sure, they don’t all stay but I don’t see droves leaving during halftime.

You also have almost 70k undergrads. Ole Miss has like 20k, half of those being chicks who have no interest in anything but the grove

Also not mentioned, but some things about the past event made it more impactful. I have spoken to many AD's over the past 20 years and they know they have made a deal with the devil (media) but they will be retired before it crashes.
Some things I notice
If you play as a kid, you follow more as an adult
Paper stubs are keepsakes
Bonding between generations (dad took me to games, just us)
College noise (like live bands) create more energy than canned music
Season tickets meant generational friends around you (passed down time)
Cost has gotten out of hand
Costs have bloated, no Scottish money managers
Around the early 1970's I remember the BooBirds started showing up

We are going to need to expand the student section to 60k and Kyle field to 150k very soon

I think that the larger the school, the more likely you have a pool of students that want to stay. They are the ones that get the tickets and are interested. We do have a lot of out of state students which I do think factors into the equation.
People are making good points.
A lot of people in our fanbase want them to take some of the student allotment away and make them general admission areas for families. We used to have this when we had shitty bleachers in the endzones. That is gone now.
