What a weird number. 8 is the correct number. 16 is to many however I'd be more down for 16 then some dumb 12 number.

12 makes sense. Top 4 teams get byes, and guaranteed to host a game at home, 5-12 play each other, and then your semis and finals are at neutral sites.
Plus, 6 highest rated conference champs auto bids means some G5 schools will make it in, which is good.

My thoughts have always been 8 teams.
4 Super conferences of 20 teams
2 Division winners make the 8 teams. Conf championship is the first round of the playoffs.
then on and on until you get to the winner.
