While not seeing him play till late in his career you heard the stories. I was a Boston fan but was young when he played.

Russell won better than anyone. He had 11 championships with the Celtics, including eight consecutive titles. There was not a Finals MVP until 1969. Today, the Finals MVP award is named after him.

Passed away?

No, it hasn't. Because this is not an SEC related topic.

He was a great and humble player. Basketball has lost one of its greatest of all time.

Besides the douche bag(s) dv or making stupid remarks above.

He was a humble dominant player in his day. A true legend.

also this board has been allowing some posters to fawn over notre dame recruits so I don’t see the problem.

and Louisiana loved their legend so much that y'all's racist asses ran his family out of the state when he was 8. He probably wouldn't have embraced his Louisiana heritage with a 10 foot pole

quote:

Russell was born on February 12, 1934, to Charles Russell and Katie Russell in West Monroe, Louisiana. Like almost all Southern towns and cities of that time, Monroe was very segregated and the Russells often struggled with racism in their daily lives.[17] Russell's father was once refused service at a gas station until the staff had taken care of all the white customers first. When he attempted to leave and find a different station, the attendant stuck a shotgun in his face and threatened to kill him if he did not stay and wait his turn.[17] In another incident, Russell's mother was walking outside in a fancy dress when a white policeman accosted her. He told her to go home and remove the dress, which he described as "white woman's clothing".

He played with at least one, Bailey Howell, Mississippi State. Btw, as conservative and non-flashy as he was on the parquet floor, he had a penchant for hanging out in the subway stations of Boston wearing a Super Man cape back in the 1960s. How crazy is that? Just good clean fun.

Bill Russell was a true NBA legend and news of his passing is big enough to be announced on any sports board. He is the reason we keep blocked shots as a stat. 11 time NBA Champion and nicknamed "the Secretary of Defense". His passing is a big deal. I imagine he is in every kind of hall of fame for basketball that he played in.

Yeah because LA was the only racist state in the south. I can't stand people that want to try and erase the past by promoting their own racism.... instead of learning from mistakes in order to better.

Didn't say it wasn't. That's why his family moved out of the south entirely.

An LSU great, Bob Petite, was very close to Russell and had him to his Moms house for dinner in Baton Rouge.
