If Frank doesn’t move us to the SEC in ‘91, do we get hung out to dry in today’s expansion climate like a lot of the Big 12 and PAC 12 are about to see happen? While we have had nowhere near the same football success, there is no question our brand and overall AD have become strong enough since joining the SEC that we’d make any super conference cut. I’m so sure though if that’s the case if we’d stuck it out and followed the Big 8 merger path instead. I could easily see us in a similar situation that Kansas and Oklahoma State are about to be in.

What are your thoughts?

Paw Paw saw the hand writing on the wall.
The Hogs and the Cocks were the first in conference expansion.

Frank made a great move. I don't know that he ever really understood how great a move it would turn out to be long term. But it certainly has benefitted us substantially. The whole big 12 situation always was a mess. They didn't have the financial support necessary in all universities to succeed vs what the SEC was bringing.

I think Frank was primarily tired of Texas and their antics.

Secondarily, it didn't take a seer to see that the SEC was stronger top to bottom than any conference with Rice, TCU (at the time), SMU and Texas Tech.

Doubtful that anyone saw the situation today with NCAA being replaced by super conferences.

FWIW....I also think college sports will soon look a lot like the NBA.

It would be awesome if he was still alive to see if he saw it all going this far. I mean he hit that jackpot for Arkansas more than he probably ever imagined. We’d be so screwed right now IMO if he hadn’t made that leap of faith.

Arkansas likely stays in the SWC for a little longer. Arkansas wasn't some small program like TCU. Rice, SMU or Houston that didn't really provide anything of value to a conference. It is very unlikely that schools like Arkansas. Texas, A&M and Texas Tech would be left out to dry. What would probably happen is Frank and other ADS from other SWC schools would go about saving or maybe merging with the Big 8 conference, Frank tried to get Arkansas to join but no avail.

But it was inevitable that Arkansas would leave for the SEC as they would pay more money. They would be so sick and tired of the Texas politics shunning them out for so many years. Arkansas just needed a break from the Texas schools. Now after so many years, Arkansas is excited about Texas joining the SEC because Arkansas just didn't seem to fit in the SEC. With Texas and Oklahoma coming in, those two schools seem better rivals geographically than the rest SEC.

I think Kansas and Oklahoma State will be ok long term. The SEC and Big 10 might end up with like 32 teams each.

Schools that will be left behind are the Tulsas, Arkansas States, Memphises.

try finding nice pictures of Stillwater on the web that excite people about making that their destination

location, location, location

Kansas? Think about a life of caring about only one sport, ever

do we see any NWA people packing up like hell and moving the hell ASAP to Texas? Nope

do we see Texas people moving like hell to here? yep

I had an interview for a job in Norman, OK once and I went there for a weekend to see how I might like it, before I did the interview.

I got home on Sunday and cancelled the interview and stayed in NWA.

southeastern powerbrokers are older than Texas powerbrokers

Frank grew up around the former

I don’t think anyone could have fully foreseen what a great move it’s been. But yes, I think that in addition to being tired of dealing with Texas’s shite, etc. Frank saw the money and knew that the conference would split into two divisions that would create a championship game as well as provide a better overall market and platform for us (as well as a cultural fit - we are Southern. Not Southwestern.). Frank also played at Georgia Tech and was familiar with and obviously kept good ties with the SEC and struck while the iron was hot.
