Both Miami and Nebraska were better than Auburn that season
Youre half right.

Miami was mediocre all year. Got the shite kicked out of them by Florida to open the season. They beat exactly two teams that finished the season ranked : #16 West Virginia and #20 East Carolina. Meanwhile, AU beat 4 teams ranked in the top 15 in their last 5 games (and the other game was against Maryland, which was ranked #7 at gametime).

The Canes lucked into an Orange Bowl invite by a Nebraska team that figured they’d be easy pickings. Sure, they played the game of their lives, but they didn’t deserve the NC that year.

Hell. UGa had a better claim to #1 than the U did.

This was a year that needed a playoff for sure

Nebraska undefeated loses at end to Miami
UGA beats Texas
Texas beats Auburn
Auburn beats UGA
UGA and Auburn beat Florida
Florida beats Miami

Auburn fans have a strong case they should have been NC.

Of course as a UGA fan I’m going to think if HW has come back in 83 like he should have he’d have put every college rushing record so far out of reach it’s never sniffed again and Georgia cruises to NC.

Miami got their comeuppance being left out of the 2000 NC game against OU.
