01 for sure. Woulda had an argument several years in the 90s for the 4th spot. Believe there were a few teams in the late 80s that finished around 11-1ish and near the top 4. And since we are talking about the past, General Neyland had tons of teams in the 30s/40s/50s, that could have made a top 4 playoff. Over the last 100 years the 1970s and 20teens are really the only two horrific decades Tennessee has had in football.

But AP rankings don’t ultimately matter to the playoff selection committee. Tennessee, Florida, Miami, and either Nebraska/OU woulda gotten the nod that year imo.
But yes, we wouldn’t have made it in 04. Woulda had to have beaten ND and AU at least once that year to make it.

The BCS rankings and the CFP rankings have different considerations and objectives so it doesn’t really matter what the BCS ranking was. If the playoff had existed at the time the ranking may have been different. We had an insane amount of talent that year. And there has been a 2-loss National champ before (LSU 2007). So definitely possible.
I agree 04 wouldn’t have made it

I'm talking about the BCS. And every year the same 4 teams in the AP have made the CFP.

When have the 4 CFP teams been different from the top 4 in the AP and simulated BCS? And 07 LSU was a conference champ, 01 Vols weren't.

Buddy it’s a hypothetical, it’s entirely possible we might have made it in 01. Stranger things have happened. It’s not like it matters

The talent on the field for the 2001 Tennessee/Florida was disgusting. Virtually every starter on both sides ultimately played in the NFL

That's a far cry from saying it was guaranteed.

I said likely. Always gotta leave some wiggle room. Nothing is ever guaranteed.
But I will downgrade that to 50/50 if that makes you happy

Billy Ratliff fired off the ball and knocked Brandon bulsworth backwards into the quarterback who then fell over. It wasn’t a fluke.

I've watched the play multiple times and Bulswaorth wasn't "knocked" backwoods at all.He was backing up on the snap and even IF (huge IF there) he knocked em "backwards" it's still wasn't the reason Stoerner didn't protect the ball.He could have easily tucked the ball when was tripped.
It doesn't get any more flukey than that

Tennessee woulda gotten a crack at had we had the benefit of being given another chance after either losing the SEC Title game or finishing 2nd in the SEC/Sec East.
Who has fjnished 2nd in the SECE and made playoffs?
And UGA could've also made a 4 team playoff in '02,'12 and perhaps '07...the argument is somewhat pointless

We would've made it in a 4 team playoff in 2001. He's trolling you.

No you wouldn't.
You were ranked 8th after the SECCG...not a chance in Hell.

Man, 1980 had it all.
1. A nice round number that just kind of rolled off your tongue.
2. The math to the determine the amount of time that had passed was easy.
3. Only had to type best player’s first name. Convenient. He was also such a force that Herschel was kind of the 1980 national champion himself and Georgia was just along for the ride. This led to more insecurity for rival fans to prey upon since Georgia needed arguably the greatest player in the history of frickin’ college football to get over the hump when they DID win the damn thing all those years ago.

1998 is old, but not quite 40 years old.
