Where does this stand as of now? IMO, there hasn't been a pitcher dominant enough to win it this year.

Candidates:

Trey Lipscomb (UT) - .357/.428/.780, 18 HR, 65 RBI

Sonny DiChiara (AU) - .436/.597/.842, 13 HR, 40 RBI

Jacob Berry (LSU) - .377/.464/.680, 15 HR, 45 RBI

Those seem to be the favorites right now. I'd give Lipscomb the edge based on what Tennessee has accomplished.

Others who could make a push: Dylan Crews, Dominic Keegan, Jud Fabian, Drew Gilbert

It is probably Lipscomb, and I hate everything about Vitello and his pack of brats

I'll take the guy batting over 400 who gets intentionally walked all the time

DiChiara doesn't have near the protection behind him that the others have which is why he is intentionally walked so often. The 0.600 OBP is ridiculous. Imagine his stats if he was surrounded by UT's lineup.

Probably should say as a result. If Auburn can finish first in the West then he could win

For me, it is clearly Sonny DiChiara. He should the national player of the year as well.

A 1.439 OPS is ridiculous.

Gilbert deserves a mention because of his defensive contribution. He’s probably the best defensive center fielder in the conference. If hitting is the only metric it’s got to be the Auburn first baseman

Dichiara should win it IMO. His numbers are just stupid. And if teams pitched to him, his volume stats would be even more impressive, but that OPS he has is just ridiculous. Hre also doesn't have the offensive help around him that someone like Lipscomb has for more RBI opportunities. Dichiara has been walked 50 times this season (and has 6 HBPs). He leads the league, by a lot, in batting average (.436), slugging (.842), and on base percentage (.597). By comparison, Lipscomb has just 18 walks and 5 HBPs, so 23 free passes to Dichiara's 56 and Lipscomb's splits are .357/.780/.428

That said, I think Lipscomb is going to be named POY

Gilbert is no better defensively than Dylan Crews, Enrique Bradfield, Jr., or Jud Fabian. Crews and Fabian both have better offensive numbers this season.

Jud's BA is lower than Gilbert's. I think (after last night's three dingers) Jud leads the SEC in HR's at 19.

Base on Balls NCAA Leaders:

1. Sonny DiChiara - Auburn - 50 BB (1.22 per game)
NR. Trey Lipscomb - Tennessee - 18 BB (0.41 per game)
NR. Jacob Berry - LSU - 21 BB (0.49 per game)

NCAA only ranks the top 100 and stopped with two players at 0.76 per game.

NCAA D1 Baseball Stats

ETA...brain fart, looked up Lipcius for UT instead of Lipscomb. Regardless...DiChiara as NCAA leader is crazy with his average and is having an incredible year.

Can you imagine what he'd be like if he would shed 80-90 lbs.?

Jason Howell is also a better defensive CF.
