Lots of chatter that Howland will retire at State end of season

Team just can't pull off the big win. Dropped another chance last night.
LSU and Alabama coming up, then a run of five games that they should be favored in before ending the season with Auburn and A&M. They have a decent shot at the NCAA Tournament, but really need to win one of the three they shouldn't.
Howland leaves State in a much better situation that he found it. State's basketball history isn't terrible and there is a commitment for a major renovation of the Hump. Names being mentioned:
Furman coach Bob Richey
North Texas coach Grant McCasland
New Mexico State coach Chris Jans
LSU assistant Bill Armstrong
Washington State coach Kyle Smith
Former Arizona coach Sean Miller

Good. If he can't make the tourney with the talent on this team, he needs to go.

Thank goodness. The game has passed him by. 7 years in Starkville, 1 NCAA tournament appearances, zero NCAA tournament wins and getting paid over 2 million per year.

His offense is archaic and pretty boring.
Our number of missed free throws is usually more than the number of points we lose the game by.

if he was truly interested, it’d be hard not to go in that direction.

Sean Miller will choose us over Mississippi State. We actually care about basketball. Many people say we're a sleeping giant. State just can't compete with our arena, facilities, city, basketball loving fan base and close proximity to good basketball cruits.

This is who I would go after, watched his team the other night. He is night and day on the sidelines when compared to Howland.

I am a Big Ben Howland fan and he has done a great job of recruiting. But we have just not been able to get over the “Hump” (no pun intended). The 2020 team was a NCAA team but obviously did not get to participate so in reality he has had Two NCAA teams.
I don’t really count his first two years because his first team (2016) was a Senior(6 se laden Ray team that played over their heads but were still just average. Then in 2017, it was a brand new team.
So in fairness, I think from 2018 to the present is what Howland should be judged by.
We have two NIT teams (one went to the finals and one to the semifinals), one NCAA team (one and done-underachieved), one NCAA team that did not get to participate. And the jury is out on this team but it is trending the wrong way right now.
So his resume over the last five years is solid even if we feel he has underachieved based on the talent we have had.
So I am not ready to pull the plug on the man just yet. Let this season finish out and we will see what happens. If he retires on his volition, then that is fine but I hope it will be his decision and only his decision.

Should bring back Rick Stansbury

He’s like Mike Anderson at Arkansas. You keep him until you feel like you’re in a good situation to definitively upgrade your head coach. I wouldn’t dump him just to bring in a run of the mill mid major coach like Kermit Davis.

They have a decent shot at the NCAA Tournament
