Derek Mason, who was reportedly linked to the defensive coordinator opening at Oklahoma State, is set to leave his position at Auburn.
Mason will move on from Auburn, and linebackers coach/assistant head coach Jeff Schmedding is expected to be promoted to defensive coordinator, Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports reported.
Auburn last season ranked fourth in the SEC in fewest yards per play allowed, and Mason seemed to have the Auburn defense in a good position entering the 2022 season. Mason’s departure followed coach Bryan Harsin firing offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, and the Tigers replaced Bobo with former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Austin Davis.
Schmedding stepped in for Harsin as the “in-person” head coach about 5 months ago when Harsin tested positive for COVID-19.
Schmedding came with Harsin from Boise State, as he spent the previous 2 seasons on Harsin’s staff at Boise State as the defensive coordinator (play caller) for the Broncos.

UT fans. Can you give me some pointers on how you've coped the last 20 years?

I didn't watch a ton of Auburn football this year, but when I did I wasn't really noticing great scheming on defense or anything.
Not that it was bad, I just think Auburn had some players on defense and that unit was probably going to be good regardless of what you called.
I think this does point to a broader problem within the program and with Harsin though. His bump class being outside the top 10 in recruiting and them not really bringing in any stud recruiters with their new hires doesn't bode well. If things go south hes out after this year or in '23.

Technically Mason outlasted Todd Grantham in the SEC. Puffy Vest 1 - Fat Unemployed Guys 0

Mason probably doesn’t suspect he can maintain that performance in year 2 is my reckon. Also seems to be a trend that guys who were probably not Harsin’s first choice (local, SEC connected guys) are leaving and getting replaced with his potato buds.

Mason was an affirmative action hire at Vanderbilt AND Auburn.
I wonder who else will need some ‘equity feels’ next.

Auburn better hope this guy works out or they will become the biggest big 6 dumpster fire since Tennessee

We are going to suck in football for the foreseeable future and maybe beyond.
Thank god for Bruce Pearl.

Mason got way more love as Auburn's DC than he deserved. We were shite on defense when it actually mattered.
What he allowed Mississippi Stat to do should've had him fired that evening

Maybe Gus will come back if they ask him nicely.

Sorry if already mentioned, but any AU folks know what caused this? I’ve always liked Mason and he seemed to do a pretty good job for y’all this past season.
Was he fired/pushed out or chose to leave on his own?
