Hello fellow ranters, where do you suggest to stay overnight in Oxford and do you have a favorite restaurant for dinner? Is there a particularly nice hotel near the Square? The plan is to visit William Faulkner's home and the famous book store. Many thanks!

Any hotel in Holly Springs should be safe and affordable.

Before you start booking in Holly Springs, that was a joke. Don't even stop there.

Nearly every restaurant on the Square is excellent. McEwans, City Grocery, Boure, etc. You almost can’t go wrong on the Square. Upscale lodging at The Graduate or Chancellors House.

Not like that, it is a great restaurant off of North Lamar near that Greek place (or at least where the Greek place used to be, I have barely been to Oxford in a long time) just before you get up to Handy Andy.

Just had breakfast at Big Bad Breakfast this morning. The hype is real - it is a must for anyone coming to Oxford. Best grits I've ever had. Probably gonna hit up Bouré or City Grocery for dinner.

Ajax is trash... It is worse than cracker barrel. Everything else is pretty good tho.

This makes me sad. That was my favorite place when I was there like 9 years ago. Someone else told me that had fallen off.

It's never been great. Okay at best. Lots of hype. You guys are great at hype and PR. Usually no substance tho... Unlike this year's football team. Y'all good this year. Good luck on your game.

They're growing all over the southeast now.

I lived in Oxford for 6 years and never ate at Ajax more than once - hype train but if you are a portly human that likes gravy and meatloaf then you may be interested in it.

For the Sqaure itself for Sola, McEwens, City Grocery, Lenora’s are solid choices - can’t go wrong with those.

City Grocery is a great pick. Bourbon and steak topped with some foie gras!

That is sad. It was one of my favorites when I’d visit as well. The Turkey with jalapeño cornbread dressing was great.

They’re putting a Big Bad Breakfast here in Louisville.

For OP, I never got a chance to eat at City Grocery but it was well spoken of there. I did get to eat at Boure and it was delicious. Also nice to get a bourbon upstairs and sit on the balcony and people watch.

oh gotcha you just think your particular taste in food is shared by everyone else.

That explains it.

I work over there a lot and I stay at the Marriot Courtyard in downtown and go to Boure on the square for dinner

From personal experience stay at the Graduate and eat at basically any restaurant on the Square. Boure would be a good choice.

It's still decent. I'd agree that the quality has gone down, but it's perfectly fine for lunch. As others have said, Marriot courtyard, graduate, or chancellor's house are great choices. I love Boure every time I go just for the variety of menu. Steaks are good at Julep and Oxford Grillehouse. Pasta is good at Venice Kitchen (formerly known as Old Venice).
