Al.com - Byrne talks COVID, Arena

quote:

Aside from the health circumstances, Byrne said Alabama’s athletics department also has “some facility projects that we know we need to be focused on” entering 2022.

The second phase of Alabama’s “Crimson Standard” fundraising program announced in 2018 included renovations to Coleman Coliseum, although Byrne said last month that while a renovation is still possible, the school was looking at “other options” in terms of replacing the basketball and gymnastics facility.

“We are out actively raising money for Phase II and we hope to be able to announce some things sometime in the first quarter of 2022 of where we are, give everybody an update,” Byrne said Tuesday. “I certainly know the things that people are interested in and want to see happen. Nobody wants to see them happen more than I do. It’s something that our development team is working tirelessly on. They’ve had me out a lot on fundraising discussions and calls and solicitations.

“I can tell you, we’ve been very fortunate. Our donors have really stepped up. What I can also tell you is it’s going to take everybody, alright? And so soon after we go through this quiet phase of what we’re doing, we’ll come out to everybody and whether it’s giving a thousand dollars, ten thousand dollars, a hundred thousand -- hopefully there’s some other seven-figure and even eight-figure gifts out there that we don’t know about -- that’s how you move this along to get some significant things accomplished.

“Because of the passion, the interest, the wonderful support of our donor base, I feel very confident we will be able to do that. But it will take everybody. Everybody to make that happen. We will be giving you that opportunity down the road here, hopefully in the not-so-distant future and when that time comes, we’re hoping to hear a lot of yeses and a lot of amens from the church body as we move this thing forward.”

If it doesn't happen, you might as well say goodbye to Oats, or any future elite coach. Our boosters and administration need to show a big commitment to our basketball program. We could be one of the elite programs in the country year in and year out based on the resources we have available.

This combined with the stuff that some of us have heard from solid sources makes it pretty clear they are just buttoning everything up with the cornerstone boosters/donors before they make the announcement.

So frickin excited.

I refuse to believe that we will be getting a new arena until they break ground at the site. This alleged first quarter announcement is going to be for renovations to the soccer facilities or a new sound system and concession stands at BDS as far as I'm concerned.

It will be justified as a traffic reduction measure because the people who own them will have the option of spending the night in their suites after the game.

Please don't give them any ideas, you know they're always looking to add more apartments. Can't believe what The Strip looks like now. Very sad.

Damn you, George. I thought this thread was about Bryne leaving for a split second. I was about to melt.

It’s an embarrassment that an athletic department as rich as Alabama’s and the 2nd most successful basketball program in SEC history coming off a Sweet 16 appearance is having to discuss whether we should renovate a 1960s quonset hut or build a new arena. It’s absurd.
