Lets talk about the transfer portal

So many of us have shown disdain for the transfer portal. I have heard a lot of discussion like it will ruin college football, recruiting, etc.
I believe there is some validity to those claims. They may not be 100% true but you have to understand why those claims are being made.
Then you switch sides from a fan to a player and look at a guy like Malik Willis. Now so many of us here wanted so badly for Malik to be Nick Marshall 2.0 for Auburn. That was not going to happen due to numerous reasons (Him not being ready, not having the players we needed to work that system, coach sucked, whatever) Wasnt going to happen. If he stayed at Auburn, he would have never had the opportunity to grow and reach his potential
So he hits the portal, gets with a coach and program that allows him to grow and get coached up. Now just a couple years later, he will be headed to the NFL draft as a high draft pick.
I think Malik has grown leaps and bounds to where he was his last year at Roswell where I watched him come 1 play from winning the State Championship in his first year playing QB. Im still not convinced he is a NFL calibur QB right now, he may just be one of the best of what is available.
But I am still pulling for that guy like I have since he first stepped on the Plains. Congrats to him.

It honestly might help a lot of teams. It may create more parity in the sport.

That's what I think. You're not gonna be able to hoard 4 and 5 stars on your depth chart anymore. If those dudes don't start, they gone.

Honestly, I think from a players standpoint, it helps the quarterbacks the most. They are the position that the back up rarely plays. If you are a running back, DB ro WR, you will more than likely get some playing time and be able to play yourself into more playing time
Thats just not the case for a QB.

I like it. There’s guys every year that float under the radar and end up at smaller schools. I like seeing those guys move up in competition after showing out. Some of Auburn’s best players this year were portal pick ups. Harsin needs to hit the portal hard again this offseason. Especially on the Oline.

I’m just curious if most of these former 5 stars already know where they’re going when they hit the portal, or do they go through the recruitment process all over again.
I assume the guys at smaller schools moving up go through more of what we see from high school guys. Taking visits and all of that, because they didn’t the first time through.

My fear is the portal + NIL will end up concentrating even more talent at the “brand name” schools, i.e. the ones that are already at the top. Sort of like free agency in MLB has guaranteed that the major market teams will almost always be the most successful.

I don’t see talented players going to sit, just so they can have an NIL deal with Milos sweet tea. They want to see the field and put themselves on tape for the next level.

I like the Portal in the idea that a player can get a fresh start and a new chance at a different school.
I don't like that some kids get bad advice and go to the portal and don't get picked up by another school.

With the way most of them commit so quickly to another school, there has to be talks going on beforehand. Even though they’re not supposed to…

I know coaches are not suppose to contact players before they hit the portal but like everything else, you know its happening.
You would have to think some players have a few places in mind before hand. They may not be talking directly to coaches but there are guys out there in their ear

Coaches can’t contact players before they hit the portal, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing that says coaches can’t contact family members and high school coaches before then. There’s a workaround for everything and the portal is no different.

Overall I believe the transfer portal is a good thing for the athletes. Coaches too. A fair balance of leverage is intact. If coaches can depart for a bigger paycheck then athletes can depart to the rival for immediate eligibility.
A team under sanctions or hitting historic lows in this era is probably toast though. What happens if Tre Mason or Greg Robinson leaves after 2012 season? Would 2013 have happened? What about the lesser tier schools? Sure sometimes they might land a backup QB from Ohio State and go on to have a great year but what if more quality players leave than come in? Syracuse got Mississippi State’s former starting quarterback but it seems the rest of their offense is in the portal.
Tennessee lost maybe 30 players to the port hole last year including their star defensive player to Alabama. Something like that is catastrophic for building a team roster, program stability, and not wanted by the fans. The NCAA modified recruiting rules to help account for teams that experienced mass exodus of transfers away from the program. As long as the depleted program can recruit out of the mess they will be okay, but if they cannot replace them they are doomed to be down for years. Fortunately for Tennessee, Heupel is a good coach and he is ahead of schedule at the moment so he should be able to recruit to a full roster.
In summary it can give but it can REALLY take, especially if you surprisingly suck or expectedly suck.

I also like it for the accountability on the recruiting trail.

In what way baw. I agree that anything that holds the coaches accountable is probably a good thing.

Case in point how Kirby handled Justin Fields. Basically told him he would start.

Yeah that’s a great example

We have a LOT to sell recruits inside and outside of the portal.
Taking Bama to the wire in a 4OT game is a huge selling point.
“Look Johnny 4 or 5 star, if we only had your help we could get over the hump and be a championship contender in the SEC.”
What happened yesterday helped Auburn more than folks realize while Kirby lost credibility.
