Lets talk about the transfer portal

It honestly might help a lot of teams. It may create more parity in the sport.

Honestly, I think from a players standpoint, it helps the quarterbacks the most. They are the position that the back up rarely plays. If you are a running back, DB ro WR, you will more than likely get some playing time and be able to play yourself into more playing time

Thats just not the case for a QB.

I’m just curious if most of these former 5 stars already know where they’re going when they hit the portal, or do they go through the recruitment process all over again.

I assume the guys at smaller schools moving up go through more of what we see from high school guys. Taking visits and all of that, because they didn’t the first time through.

I don’t see talented players going to sit, just so they can have an NIL deal with Milos sweet tea. They want to see the field and put themselves on tape for the next level.

With the way most of them commit so quickly to another school, there has to be talks going on beforehand. Even though they’re not supposed to…

I know coaches are not suppose to contact players before they hit the portal but like everything else, you know its happening.

You would have to think some players have a few places in mind before hand. They may not be talking directly to coaches but there are guys out there in their ear

Coaches can’t contact players before they hit the portal, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing that says coaches can’t contact family members and high school coaches before then. There’s a workaround for everything and the portal is no different.

Overall I believe the transfer portal is a good thing for the athletes. Coaches too. A fair balance of leverage is intact. If coaches can depart for a bigger paycheck then athletes can depart to the rival for immediate eligibility.


A team under sanctions or hitting historic lows in this era is probably toast though. What happens if Tre Mason or Greg Robinson leaves after 2012 season? Would 2013 have happened? What about the lesser tier schools? Sure sometimes they might land a backup QB from Ohio State and go on to have a great year but what if more quality players leave than come in? Syracuse got Mississippi State’s former starting quarterback but it seems the rest of their offense is in the portal.

Tennessee lost maybe 30 players to the port hole last year including their star defensive player to Alabama. Something like that is catastrophic for building a team roster, program stability, and not wanted by the fans. The NCAA modified recruiting rules to help account for teams that experienced mass exodus of transfers away from the program. As long as the depleted program can recruit out of the mess they will be okay, but if they cannot replace them they are doomed to be down for years. Fortunately for Tennessee, Heupel is a good coach and he is ahead of schedule at the moment so he should be able to recruit to a full roster.


In summary it can give but it can REALLY take, especially if you surprisingly suck or expectedly suck.

In what way baw. I agree that anything that holds the coaches accountable is probably a good thing.
