Skip on Ron Polk

Skip was just on the local sports talk show & he had a lot to say bout college baseball, specifics & general. But he had a lot of good things to say about Polk, calling him a "50 yr long friend" & a "great for college baseball". He also laughed & said Polk was famous for writing long letters to the NCAA in his ongoing fight for college baseball/players. And when his A.D. would get a call from the NCAA asking the A.D. to make Polk stop, Polk would write even longer, more scathing letters. But his best compliment was in saying "Polk was always telling me that when they limit me to 35 scholarships, I am going to quit, as I will never tell a college kid he cann't play baseball. And he did quit when it happened." Would love to sit around a table in a bar & listen to these 2 swap stories.

Only Sad the Ron never got the Big Prize, same with Mike Martin.
So for all of the reactionary SEC fans whining about post-season results, remember that unpredictability is what makes Baseball great.

Polk took 2 teams to the CWS. I'm glad he got the chance to retire at State.

Guy would have been greatest ever if he would have coached anywhere but Miss St. (or Ole Miss)

Polk first took Ga Southern to a CWS, then as coach at Miss State took MSU to 6 or 7. Then after retiring he came out of retirement to help UGA for a short period and took them to the CWS also.

Have a great friend that played for Coach Polk on Team USA in the late 1990s, Coach Polk found out he got married (and the date) and his birthday date. Coach Polk has written him a personal note each year that are delivered on or just before his birthday and wedding anniversary. One of his teammates told him that he would be getting a handwritten note when they started practicing and sure enough it happened and continued this year. Said he does it for all former players.

I believe it because our baseball announcer was interviewing him once and joked how on earth he keeps in touch with so many former players. Polk describe it as a labor of love and said he also gets a lot of phone calls too.
By the way, I read where one of the Lsu fans posted about his long time friendship with Skip Bertman. That is also a fact. They both loved the game and have been close friends for many years. Skip used to poke at Ron Polk (In good spirit) making funnies about Starkville etc but they were and have been great friends to this day.

When did they first start limiting scholarships?

Honestly I am not sure but it was whenever title 9 was implemented I think but I may be wrong.

Been doing it for many years and I bet he was key in getting the Palmeiro Center built. Did you know back in the day when there was no money spent on college baseball that Ron Polk drove a tractor himself and nourished everything about our stadium?
