I’ve always felt Gus was never the same after the 2014 game vs Texas A&M. He was never the same to me after that. I still supported him… until that 2017 LSU game. I wanted him gone after that and never budged. Even knowing what would happen later in the season, I never got back on the bus.
But to the OP… as others have said it isn’t just Auburn. SEC programs aren’t stepping stone programs. The only real place to go up is the NFL. Otherwise you are being fired or you retire.

I walked out of Tiger Stadium that day and felt that Gus should have been fired before they made it back to Auburn that night. That total collapse in that was inexcusable - he lost my support that day as well.

In an alternate universe, Dye would have been here through about 2006 or so.
I met him face to face in 1992 during the Spring. He was done.
If he'd have stayed past 1992 it would have been even worse.
Maybe Wayne Hall could have carried on had things gone differently.

I was there for the 2018 LSU game where we blew the other lead. I've told this story here but Auburn fans were just a cussing Gus after the game. One man was so angry he kept barking at his wife to hurry it up while they walked to the car.
There were not many Gus defenders left at that point and the 2019 IB wasn't worth the lame duck. We easily could have split then.

He lived until 2020 I think.
Covid got him.
I know he had hemachromatosis and serious liver issues, but I wish he could have stayed healthy 25 years.

June 1, 2020.
He tested positive for covid but was asymptomatic.
He had been in the hospital for weeks with kidney issues, which is what finally got him.
I am surprised he made it to 80 honestly.

Because we usually always end up hiring coaches that not a single other P5 school would even consider hiring
