Yeah and he's responsible for Tuberville flirting with every open job during his tenure. Also directly responsible for what we are seeing with coaching salaries and buyouts right now.
Auburn wouldn't deal with him at one point. I think Chizik had to replace him before we'd hire him. He may be Malzahn's agent though.

He is.
He's almost every well known College HCs agent.

What is a "conflict of interest"?

He makes it work and his clients don't have a problem with it.
If I was a HC, my agent would be Sexton

Doesn't Pat Dye Jr. represent a few or does he just work with athletes?

Well, no, of course they don't. He is able to leverage every job opening and create bidding wars, real or fake, by putting his clients against each other. It's like insider trading for him and his clients. Sexton holds all the cards, or at least everything about a 5. It's why salaries and buyouts are sky-rocketing moreso than even just the desire to find the next great coach before they're a proven great coach.

That really pissed me off during Tubs time at AU.

As you can tell from the replies so far.. Nobody knows still.

yet we're still paying him his buyout I believe

you think it takes eight years to pay off a 5 mil buyout?
Tuberville's buyout was paid in full within a year of his firing.

The contract states that Tuberville must receive half within 30 days and the other half by the one-year anniversary date of the contract’s termination.

Well then conflict of interest isn't a problem if the clients know about it and don't have a problem with it.

why is this myth so prevalent?
Because every Bama fan in the world still thinks we are paying Wayne Hall and Terry Bowden too.

The athletic department forced him to make changes to the staff and offensive philosophy at the end of 2007 and it predictably didn't work out so he quit.

Dude, there is always a portion of Auburn fandom whose initial reaction, even without knowing ANY facts about the situation, is inevitably "Auburn is wrong" or "Auburn screwed up".

It can still be a conflict of interest, even if it's not ultimately hurting the system. There are two issues for the system (ie college football). The ongoing retreading of coaches because of their agent (whether Sexton or one of the other main ones) being able to push them back into a job is the first one. The other secondary problem will be a "rich get richer and poor get poorer" situation as smaller schools continue to be priced out more and more.

odd story, but i actually ran into Todd McShay in a bar in Tuscaloosa after the 08 IB (he actually is a really cool dude and was not a doucher like he can appear to be on TV) and chatted with him. He'd said that all of his sources maintained that Auburn planned to give Tubs another year until after we lost so badly. He said that after the loss, the same sources had no clue if he'd keep his job.
Seems pretty obvious that they "mutually" parted ways, but Tubs had no option to actually return.

Apparently all this time ole Tubs was living rent free in Ryan Anderson's head
