"Joe Toddy, all arse and no body!" He called me Johnny Bench's bastard brother, because my arm didn't strike fear in anyone behind the dish.

Indeed Harkins was the upper 80's lefty on that staff that was absolutely great. He pitched that Jeff Davis game I mentioned IIRC. Mike Diebold was another guy on that pitching staff who was really good. To your point earlier, that was a ton of pitching talent on a high school baseball team.

I was at all the AHS varsity games that year. That series vs. Hueytown was in the meager aluminum benches days of Plainsman Park. We played Woodham HS from Pensacola for a series there my Senior year with the same set-up and it may as well been Fenway. Good Times!

Yep that AHS basketball team lost to JO Johnson 61-59 in Coleman in Tuscaloosa. Had no business losing that game.

Bumping a week old thread but given they’re playing UAB right now it’s appropriate...did everyone else realize Rhett Lashlee was the OC at Miami? I had no idea

And UAB was only down 3 in the 3rd. Pretty good for being away against a power 5 with 5 players missing due to covid. The D has looked gas since the beginning of the half, so I expect a blowout, but Clark just gets the most out of his guys. Imagine if he had SEC talent and depth...

I like Bill Clark. Think he's a good coach. I think if he had UF, UT, or AU talent he would be a 8-4ish coach. If he had UGA or bammer talent he would be 10-2ish coach. In other words I don't think he's a better coach then any of the coaches currently in the big 6 sec schools. I actually think Fisher and Kiffen are better as well. He needs to get away from UAB maybe try one of the smaller texas schools or florida schools and see how he can recruit. I imagine if he were AU's coach that our roster would look similar to how Tuberville left it. Some really good players but a lot of developmental players.

Lashlee and King at QB for Miami will be fun to watch this year.

I still root for Rhett. I think he is a good coach, Gus just needed a scapegoat.

I don't think Gus ever trashed on Lashlee but Gus has a boss as well and said changes need to be made.

I'm sure I know both of you. Class of '88 and know Gary and Tommy and Tim, his older brother well. Tommy's dad delivered our mail and I delivered their OA newspapers for years. Small world. Everyone take care. It seems we spread out all over the place. Go Tigers and War Eagle!

ETA - I was a manager for the basketball team during my years at AHS and kept the book for many of the games. I still love me some Coach Tolbert and Coach Ogle. That 87 team with William Neloms, Neville Austin (went on to play at UGA), Chris Brandt (went on to play at AU), Bubba Bryant, Mike Sanda and everyone else was probably the most talented team ever at AHS. And yes, we got robbed. Good times though!

Agree and I believe the move has been great for Rhett, he is out of Gus' shadow, proving he can do it on his own. Wont be long before he is a HC.
