NC offers Zion Cruz. Hopefully that doesn’t mess things up. He was supposed to commit to us this week.

JLee mentioned on their podcast that when he spoke to Cruz he said that the Friday date was never official and that he was just going to be committing soon.

Small nugget in Dylan Cardwell from 247

quote:

Cardwell continues to show signs of improving his offensive game, something he has been working on during the offseason. He made several shots in five-on-five scrimmage situations, including a left-handed, skyhook from the middle of the lane.

Sounds like Zep is getting great reviews for his defense so far. Spirited battle for PG1 ongoing between he and Green. All per Mark Murphy/247

Awesome we need defense badly.

J-Will is my big time break out player prediction just thought I’d throw it out there. Think he is going to get to play some 3,4, and stretch 5 and be a nightmare on offense bodying 3’s and taking 5’s out of the paint.

I think J Will could be much improved but the scoring numbers may not show it. He will play quite a bit, though

Our primary 1's and 2's are small with limited length which is a worry, so it will be interesting to see how we play against UK, who will have spaghetti monsters with length like they always do. Pearl gets it done every year so I'm not saying anything negative. More clearly stated I'd like to see how we play against UK because that will be a good barometer of how far AU can go in the NCAA tourney. Efficient guard plays is always a good factor to look at.

Hey, we did pretty well with a couple of undersized guards in 2019. Not that we have a Bryce on this team, but Wendell sounds like he's got some Jared Harper in him. And Zep sounds like an aggressive defender, which is good Pearl ball. Not to mention everything KD brings to the table on both ends of the floor, he's going to be a serious difference maker for us, his addition turned my expectations for this year up a notch. Pearl absolutely killed it in the transfer portal, I think all these guys really fit well.

I saw someone post that one thing this team is lacking is a vocal leader, but we didn't really have that in 2018-19 either. Jared, Bryce, Chuma were all quiet, reserved lead by example types. There weren't any big personalities or flashy guys on that team, those guys just went out there and did their jobs

All good points. I've said this quite a bit but Pearl has never been at a place where he could recruit length. He signs alot of shorter guards and 'tweeners at the 3 and 4. He did this at Milwaukee, Tennessee and now Auburn. My opinion is that Pearl looks at production above and beyond anything, and maybe top 5 programs might get the luxury of projecting potential and length.

To your point Bryce and Jared fit the Pearl mold. I remain convinced that if a double-dribble was called there would be a banner hanging in the arena. That's insane to think about given AU's basketball history. If you want a great AD after Pearl retires, its Pearl. He's taken a moribund, uninteresting program and has turned it into a must see event that goes to the tourney.

100% without a doubt in my mind. We would have wrecked Tech.

I'm not generally one to let sports affect my mood negatively, but I still get so mad thinking about that. Makes me wish I could go back in time to the 2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl and fight about 10 of those preppy douchebag UVA fans sitting in my section

I don’t want to talk about the double dribble. Now the beer I just cracked is ruined :(.

I think this thread needs to be nuked. I think it’s run it’s course of good juju and now has turned to bad. Powell injury, Cooper delayed… crappy season. War Ready can’t even beat scrubs from ETSU alumni.

Maybe it’s a time for a new basketball thread.

You want to talk about how loaded our front court is going to be instead?

5- Kessler, Cardwell, Stretch
4- Jabari, Jaylin
3 - Flanigan, Chris Moore?

Good fricking luck in the paint against that. Imagine we're blowing out UGA (hopefully with Kessler and KD leading the way in that game, and they still have to deal with a defender like Stretch getting garbage minutes

Bowl I’d add Cambridge to the 3’s and Flanigan as a 2/3 combo. I also think J-Will will get some minutes at 3.

Good to hear Bruce pumping up Moore with a good outside game development the other day. Personally one of my favorites on the team.
