Pearl: Recruiting needs to go well in 2019 class
Bryan Matthews • AuburnSports.com
AUBURN | Fresh off only the third regular season SEC Championship in school history and with a roster loaded with talent for the upcoming season, Bruce Pearl has his sights set on the future and maintaining Auburn’s success on the hardwood.
Pearl and his staff have already secured three commitments for a 2019 class that is ranked 7th in the country by Rivals and are pursuing several other elite prospects.
It’s a key class for the Tigers as the roster will see a lot of turnover in the next year with three seniors and several other players that could opt to leave school early for a professional basketball league. For Auburn to sustain success, Pearl must continue to add talented players to the roster.
Pearl has built Auburn into one of the SEC's top programs.

“We’ve got a roster of mostly upperclassmen and good players,” Pearl said. “There was a lot of opportunity to go out there and recruit in the ’19 class. And often times, I find that openings and those opportunities actually pave the way for more success in recruiting than just championships.
“If you have championships and return a bunch of young players, a lot of prospects – with the exception of the kind of guys that Kentucky recruits or Kansas or Duke or North Carolina, which we typically can’t get involved with. Those kids aren’t worrying about the competition because it’s one-and-done. The guys we can recruit do need to look at your roster a little bit more carefully. So now that we have opportunity, I think things are going well in recruiting. And they need to go well because we have a lot of guys to replace over the next couple of years.”
Bryce Brown, Horace Spencer and Malik Dunbar are seniors. Juniors Jared Harper, Danjel Purifoy and Austin Wiley, and perhaps a couple of others will explore their professional options after the season.
Their replacements are already lining up. Auburn has three commitments for the 2019 class so far in four-star power forward Jaylin Williams from Brantley County in Nahunta, Ga., four-star forward Isaac Okoro from McEachern in Powder Springs, Ga., and three-star small forward Allen Flanigan from Parkview in Little Rock, Ark., who is the son of former Auburn player and current assistant coach Wes Flanigan.
Auburn remains involved with a number of other top prospects including four-star point guard Tyrell Jones from West Oaks Academy in Orlando, Fla., who officially visited a couple of weeks ago, four-star small forward Christian Brown from McEachern in Powder Springs, Ga., and four-star power forward Ismael Massoud from MacDuffie School in Granby, Mass., who recently committed to Wake Forest.
McEachern teammates Okoro, Brown and 2020 5-star point guard Sharife Cooper are scheduled to visit Oct. 12.
The early signing period for basketball is Nov. 14-21. The spring signing period is April 17 - May 15.

There hasn't been a basketball off-season for me since we hired Pearl. Even with Barbee I followed recruiting and other off-season news. Lebo's boring arse I only payed attention during the season

Looking back, I feel stupid about the optimism I would always have going into a Barbee season

On one hand, I hate that bball recruiting news + general reporting is more limited than football
.... that said, it is good for my sanity to only have to keep tabs on a max of 13 scholarship players + recruits to fill those limited openings

I wish this trend would change for Auburn. Our basketball recruits are higher profile than our football recruits.

This is true.
And semi-tragic.

I could snag tickets off stubhub the day of the games for like 3 bucks when Barbee was here.

I don't have a problem with it.
I wish Gus would notice and step up his game.

I think our next big recruiting weekend is Oct 12th. Hopefully we can snag another commitment and stockpile talent. We have to plan on possibly losing guys to the pros now.

A lot of it is because on average you only take ~4 players per cycle and kids commit early. A lot less to report on
There also is the dynamic that coaches play their cards a lot closer to the vest in bball recruitment

@coachbrucepearl
Thank you, Auburn Family! 24 hours ago we went on-sale with single game tickets and have already sold out the Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, MSU and Tennessee home games. Now, let's pack the remaining 13.

God I hope we are done with this mess.

Among revelations in court this afternoon, documents suggesting Christian Dawkins paid $5,000 to Collin Sexton and another calling for $1,500 per month to Sexton, $21,000 for travel for his family and a four year job for his brother ($35,000 per year, with $5,000 annual raise).

This is the most uninteresting sports scandal ever. Can't they at least be getting houses, sports cars, and 100k's of $$$?

Speculation spurred the drama. Either way, Sexton only served a 1 game suspension. Somehow Purifoy is still suspended.,,

Not exactly. He was withheld from competition by Alabama but the NCAA never made an official ruling. With this new information, the NCAA my retroactively declare him ineligible for the entire season + punish Alabama
Alabama will likely forfeit their entire season over this + get a slap on the wrist like reduced recruiting visits or probation

Purifoy received an official NCAA ruling, so unless there is a significant material change to known information, he is good to go.
Auburn's main concern is if any new players or coaches get implicated beyond Person, Wiley, Purifoy
