I graduated 10 years ago from hs and it is incredible the difference in the build of kids from then to now
There seems to have been a huge jump in S&C at the HS level, both in terms of importance + knowledge. At the decent to good sports programs, their S&C is light years ahead of what was done in most HS in the 90s/00s
Just look through old FB recruiting raknings and the top recruits in '06 don't come close to stacking up weight wise with '18 recruits

That is happening some. My kid brother spends more time stretching during workouts than lifting. He plays jr high baseball in Alabama.

we had a fantastic s&c coach...zac reed. he ended up being the s&c coach at GT like 2 years after I graduated but we still only had like 5 kids who looked like the kids playing last night and they were on roids.

Edit: Kids from high school having tommy john’s is atrocious.

quote:Both equally important these days. You just won't see many guys in the MLB or high levels of MiLB that don't throw hard. The average fastball has increased 4 mph in 15 years in the MLB

There are plenty of guys in the majors throwing a high 80s fastball and doing so effectively.

JS, you should start a stickied baseball season/recruiting thread.. We're going to need one. Very excited about our baseball team this year because I like our coaching staff. With as much as you know, like GC with hoops, start a Auburn Baseball thread..

Did you see the post about Akingbola joining the team in June?
Posted on 2/1/18 at 3:10 am to TigerProwl24
I did not. That's badass though!
I'm guessing this means Purifoy is for sure gone? Any idea on if Wiley could be convinced to come back next season? Add Wiley, Akingbola, and Doughty to this team, hopefully manage to keep everybody currently playing (Heron obviously being the main concern). Everybody with another year of experience, finally be a veteran team with a couple of legit 4 year seniors and a bunch of juniors.
This would be a preseason top 10 team, national title contender.

... now those two were seriously worth reading

Probably not, Akingbola is more of a Horace/Anfernee replacement. I imagine the staff would be happy to RS him if Wiley returns and don't have minutes
Getting Purifoy minutes should be really easy. Purifoy may play the 3 sometimes 4, but the lineup combinations/shuffle possible means he can take minutes from SG/SF/PF/C + SG Davion Mitchell. Getting 3-4 minutes from 5-6 players= 20min
I think we are fine if we return one of Heron/Purifoy. Either guy would provide similar minutes and production

I usually do. Been busy last couple of weeks.

The thing with Purifoy...has he even played a whole season for us, without an issue with eligibility, injuries, etc?

Not sure what point you are trying to get at

quote:We'll save this for another thread. I wouldn't say "plenty" and it's a fact that number has diminished significantly over the last 15 years. I'd bet there aren't more than 25 bullpen guys in the MLB that throw a fastball less than 92mph on average and less than 5 that throw less than 90
There are plenty of guys in the majors throwing a high 80s fastball and doing so effectively.
Edit: I was curious and a friend did the research. 4 qualified starters averaged a FB <90 mph last year with 1 being Dickey

How many are lefties?

quote:No, I don't think one has anything to do with the other. The staff was reserving the only open scholly in the 2018 class for Montgomery and when he de-committed, it left the vacant spot that Akingbola just filled.
I'm guessing this means Purifoy is for sure gone?
quote:It is anyone's guess, as to how it will all shake out with Purifoy and Wiley. No one really knows yet, not even them. Those conversations will probably take place after the season is over.
Any idea on if Wiley could be convinced to come back next season?
My gut says both will never play for Auburn again but I could be wrong. I could easily see Purifoy playing overseas and Wiley declaring for the draft. I also think the chances of Wiley coming back are higher than Purifoy.
If they both came back, along with Heron, we would be 12 deep. That roster would be upsurd and we would be one of the best teams in the country, easily.
1- Harper/Mitchell
2- Brown/Doughty
3- Heron/Purifoy/Dunbar
4- Murray/Okeke
5- Wiley/McLemore/Spencer
RS-Akingbola
Right now, I think Wiley declaring for the draft, Purifoy playing overseas and Heron returning to finish his degree is most likely but who knows at this point.
With 4 seniors on next year's team and 3 others on the roster with pro aspirations, the 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes will be vital in continuing our recent success.
