I think my biggest issue is the buyout. Buyouts are a protecting a coach from suffering the consequences of crappy performance.

This is a merit based sport, why should coaching not be subject to merit based requirements?

It should, but the market won't support that.

If you identify and hire a young, up and comer, you might get away with a modest base and high incentives, but once he has a good year, you'll have to match the market.
Which is what happened with Gustav in 2013.

Where we went off the rails was getting Sextoned when Arky came calling in 2017. Hindsight is 50/50, as a wise man once said, but we really should have let him walk.

Of course then we would have probably ended up with Chadwick

Lanier is right, the contracts are what the market will bear.

Sexton does have a lot of power, he literally is working on getting a coach in the hot seat a job....while he is working with another to replace him. But thats why he has the clients, because of his clout, and his clients in turn have the clout to demand more money because he is setting the scale.

You guys seen the contract he got for Saban. Saban said he wanted control of the progam and to be the highest paid head coach in college football for as long as he was there. He never has to negotiate a pay raise, the entire rest of the market does it for him, anyone gets signed to a larger contract....so does he.

But can you argue if he is worth it? He is the highest paid and he is tops in wins. May have sounded crazy when they signed him, but it seems to have worked out best for both.

A side note, they asked Saban what he thought of Jimmy Sexton. He said they were talking about his contract with Bama when he first signed and Jimmy said he had to call him back. Saban said, one of the biggest deals in my life and the guy is gonna call me back, but hey he has a lot of clients. Saban said later he found out the reason Sexton wanted to call him back was because he was at his kid's little league game and he was coming up to bat. Saban said you have to admire a man who has his priorities right.

You know, I bash Sexton a lot on this forum, but he does seem like a decent human being, based on interviews and anecdotes like this.

That said, we need to stay the hell away from hiring his clients. He always bends our admins over and takes their lunch money in negotiations.

ETA: just read that Napier replaced his agent earlier this year - with Sexton

Freep,

In the interviews I have seen of Sexton, he makes whoever he is talking to seem like the most important person in the room. I can see how the guy could steal your lunch money....and you would brag about it the next day.

And if you dont want to deal with him....well it sure limits your options for a coach.
