Typically by the end of year 4 you have a degree and know whether or not you’re headed to the NFL or the work world. Little upside in staying another year unless you just love playing football.
Long way of saying, I could see why many wouldn’t want to stay an extra year with a new head coach coming off a 6-4 season.

We had 13 scholarship seniors. 5 coming back is a lot when you look at them individually
5 staying (Loy, Truesdell, Leonard, Wooten, Moultry)
2 transferred (Big Kat, Newkirk)
3 will try NFL (Peters, Britt, Stove
Other 3: Prince Sammons, Bill Taylor, Malcolm Askew

He committed to his HS coach, one of the assistants who was fired with cause. I don't even think Steele had been hired when he committed.

I could see him wanting the security aspect; however senior leadership skills aside it's seems wasteful to toss aside a second chance to excel.
...and because 4 years of KS hadn't extracted what was expected.
