Thing about Discord is it's a lot less personal than something like iMessage. On Discord, anyone can join in at any time so long as someone shares the link to join with them.
It also has a pretty big community behind it. You register an account which you use across the app on different chat servers.

Why do that when all you have to do is type !IM in the Message box on this site and then type your response and you can chat all you want with Ranters and Auburn Sports Boarders here?
