Same, I'm not a Deion hater. I honestly hate the group think Deion buzz more than Deion by quite a lot. And if that were just in fun - fine - but a lot of the opposition to other, more likely candidates is going to be uglier as a result.

I think the truth is I'd enjoy the media attention and buzz as much as any other AU fan, but in the back of my mind I'd be thinking "now imagine this when we fire him in year 3, etc."

I think that last part is the reason Auburn won't even consider him.

Don’t mean to be racist but how will the white kids react to him.

Who? Holden? Kickers? Punters? Or students. It's 2022. Students will get behind a winning culture regardless of race.

If there is any race angle at all with Deon - it will help in recruiting some elite skill players imo

You might not know much about young white kids today.
They will love him.

I like Deion as a player and as a personality but as the head football coach at Auburn? I just don't see it....

I don’t like blanket expressions so I offer an anecdote: I saw white 8U football players in BFE Alabama doing the gritty at their peewee football game last Saturday. Kids mostly don’t want to be social pariahs and they know what’s considered cool.

The few white Auburn players we have are socially aware enough to know that Deion is a pretty big deal, plus he offers greater personality and exposure. I was ten, white af and wanted to be Vick. Can you imagine a white baseball player not wanting to be coached by Ken Griffey Jr? I think the same goes for Deion. Lastly, most OL coaches are white anyway.

Boosters stuck in their ways, now they could be a problem.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Hell I wanted to be Griffey Jr. myself.

All the good white players are flocking to Auburn right now right?

The only color that matters is green. Kids and their families want them to get drafted. At one point, Auburn had one of the most amount of former players in the NFL. We have to get someone that can recruit and develop guys into NFL players.

Well said. If a white athlete (or fan, for that matter) has a problem with our coach potentially being black then I don’t want that person associated with AU. Try flipping that around and consider how our black athletes and fans would respond to yet another white coach. If he can coach, then he can coach!!

Yeah, I don't think there would be any issue there. White players in the south (at high levels) are surrounded by black kids and their culture. That's not to say they all emulate it, but they're certainly not going to be turned off by a swaggy black coach.

I'll be totally candid, I have reservations about Deion on behalf of AU (completely inexperienced) and personally. The personal part isn't because he's black, but yeah, I'll admit the self-promotion, prosperity gospel pastor vibes aren't really my jam. And some people will think that makes it racial (I do not, of course). If he got the job and I observed he had real depth on this stuff I'd get over it, but I'd hope he would make Auburn his brand foremost. I'm not interested in flying a Prime flag next to the AU flag at the same height.

At the risk of alienating even more Deion advocates, the closest comparison to Deion for me isn't a black guy at all - it's Trump. Relentless self-promoter and over-the-top guy who I would argue can be very useful when his self-promotion aligns with whatever the entity he serves is (Auburn, the US). But I can't say I loved that compromise with Trump, either, effective as I think it can be.

I know exactly what you’re saying. I think if he eats we eat welll. If we fail, we took a chance on the spectacular instead of the average coach with limited upside. There will be plenty of those candidates later. At least we didn’t spurn the safe pick- there isn’t one.
