I can tell you my high school worked on FTs lol. So many suicides.
I think the players work on FTs more often than what was shown tonight. Like AA7 said the players put in their time outside of practice and in shootarounds getting their reps.
By the time the players come to campus they already know how to do free throws though and coaches do not focus on that stuff nearly as much.

Holy shite. I knew we had been bad under him. But I didn’t realize it’s been THAT bad.

Memphis with Cal lost a national championship because of FTs.

Uh yeah that kinda helps my point. You know who missed those free throws? Derrick rose and Chris Douglas roberts who were both all Americans and early draft picks. Should they have not recruited them? Changed up their shot form? It just kinda is what is it is with free throw shooters. It’s a small window you have with them in college and you just try to have your best ones on the court when you’re going to be getting fouled

I'm mostly joking but it must be noted that we were not used to the refs actually calling fouls.

quote:no, its really not silly. You win or lose on the free throw line in most close games. To think otherwise is naive
Team FT % is kinda silly as a stat.

Jeez, across a season it is is what I mean. Some teams occasionally lose a game because of it. Some great free throw shooting teams occasionally lose a game because of it. Some bad ones lose a few more. We were in the top half of the SEC this year in FT%. We won a tourney game 2 days ago by knocking them down. Lost today where we couldn’t hit any.
Point is it’s not something to freak out or build a program around. Just go out and get the best players you can get.
Maybe if Calipari has recruited better free throw shooters than Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts they would have won the 2008 title. Lmao.

By the way I just looked at the first 4 teams still remaining team FT% that I could think of. Checked Bama, and they are in the 150’s. Baylor pretty good at 64th. Arkansas was 278th. Gonzaga I thought would be good and they were 239th.
Doesn’t really mean much to me, I’m sorry

mic drop
Having a few extra gimmes would've maybe given us an extra win or so. The bread and butter system and the talent are what carries a team. We missed quite a bit of free throws in the first half, and we never noticed it. Sure, if we would've made those free throws our lead would have been deeper but our self-destruction proved even that lead would have been as strong as wet toilet paper.

What are their actual %? Rankings are just numbers and not normally distributed

You can say it bro. I can take it.

I typically tend to agree with your takes but not here. Team FT is a measure. There is a reason that our teams have been so bad. Now we need to fix that
It basically cost us the game yesterday. They eliminated out lead and built their own by us missing FT's. They just kept swapping goals on their end for FT attempts on ours

It wasnt my take. I was told on here that we are just glad to make the tournament. Doesnt matter if we lose. It never matters until you lose.
Its very similar to bowl games. They dont mean shite if they are not playoff games. Until you lose them.
I look at it a little different I guess. I totally understand that our program has basically sucked forever and now we have the magic man at coach. Hell man, no coach could fit Auburn better than Pearl. But, He has been here 8-9 years which is enough time to build the program, which he has. Now its time to take those great teams to the level that they should be going. This years teams excluded.
We are not just happy to be there. We want to win the games we should win with that guys on our sideline. Everyone should think that way. It doesnt hurt anything to say that this years team should not have gotten beat in the first round of the SEC tourny. Nobody will die. It is a true statement and we must do better
We played a better team yesterday but honestly, had a chance at the end if our fundamentals(ft shooting) would have been better.
Getting some shooters in there next year should really help.....
How the hell do you play a complete half of a game and make 4 baskets? Guys were bad and I would have liked to see some time outs called to get things on track a few times during that half.

It’s an accomplishment for the team to make the NCAA tourney. Given the talent and known inconsistencies with this team, yeah I would say most were thrilled. Not sure where you are going with this.
And for the record, A&M got to the championship game in the sec tourney and bounced first round. Would you rather this?? We beat a better opponent in the first round for the NCAA. My point is, you shouldn’t put so much weight into the SEC tourney. A&M got that far for nothing.

The reason I went with rankings is because that’s what the OP went with
Posted on 3/19/23 at 3:23 pm to jangalang
No I would probably go 1 or 2-5 honestly. But I damn sure would have made way more free throws last night than our team did.
Posted on 3/19/23 at 4:33 pm to auburnnyc94
Exactly. Teams with mediocre players have guys that know how to shoot FTs. That’s because those guys practice them.
These 4 and 5 star guys in college have to work on their own time because it high school they used size or athleticism to win games
