Still, rifles are more long range and precise than shotguns and pistols. Sawing off the rifle just seems dumb.

True, when used for a legitimate purpose, it makes no sense to saw off a rifle. But he wasn’t going to try to sneak up on a deer. :-)

I saw a pic of a sawed off rifle it looked like a sawed off remington.

The reports I have read do not mention a short barrel (sawn off) rifle or shotgun but rather that he had a semiautomatic pistol that had been modified to fire full auto
