Gus is terrible at roster management for sure, but to say terrible at recruiting is wrong. We have talent all over the field at Auburn, we just dont utilize it and we sure as hell dont develop it

So, who flew from Auburn to Bloomington today?
I thought everything was being done on zoom for the interviews?

Goes way back with Freeze. Worked under him at Lambuth, Ark St, and Ole Miss.
Was DC at USF for a year under Taggart and DC for a year at Indiana under Kevin Wilson.
Been HC at Indiana since he took over as interim in 2016 before bowl game. He took them to a bowl last year and is 6-1 this year.
This would be a very "blah" hire. I don't hate him, but I don't really want him either.

Gus' recruiting was terrible in the fact his roster management and eye for talent was lacking
Yeah, I can agree with that. He brought in plenty of talent at RB. He just wasn't able to keep them around. The RB rotation is one of the more baffling things about Gus and his tenure at Auburn.

I disagree. Gus seemed to take guys like Hudson at WR. He never played the position in HS. Gatewood never played a full season at QB in his life, yet Gus thought he would be an SEC QB (everyone else projected him as a TE). We didn't have a backup MLB this year. We had low 4* guys on signing day, but our current roster is small and lower end talent. How many guys did Gus lose?

Just seems like we missed out on 15 other guys if the head coach from Indiana is who we spent 21 million to bring in

That's the impression I got.
Also, on the Split Zone Duo podcast, they did a whole episode essentially about our coaching search, and Steven Godfrey (yes, I keep bringing him up) mentioned how a lot of interviews used to be done either at Hartsfield-Jackson, or one of the many Marriots surrounding the airport just because of how busy those places are and how easy it is to blend in, and just get in and out.
I think everyone wised up after jetgate.

Look at all of the high star receivers that washed out at Auburn under Malzahn. Plenty of them.

Funny how that's a two way street.

Absolutely. DL and RB too.

Rig, do you really think MC is leaving Oregon for Auburn???
Do you think there will be a press conference for his extension and he is going to tear off his Oregon polo and have the AU logo painted on his chest?

I don't care what a guy making 39k a year says.

That’s not true. He only played QB his JR and SR year
And in Gatewood, he split reps because that’s his high school coach’s philosophy. But I do agree with you on Gatewood.
Not sure you have a point on the receivers as most of them were pretty productive high school wide outs. Just my thoughts having covered recruiting during his whole tenure at Auburn as an OC and HC

Overall concept: Gus as a good recruiter is not accurate due to his roster management and taking hybrid guys when it was obvious his ability to develop anyone was lacking.

Go full wrestling, hit the AD in a back with a steel chair, followed by his finishing move. Then the new coach will be introduced when his music hits and he runs out of to make the save.

I think Mario staying at UO is pretty much a lock at this point.
If he does stay there is no way imo that Freeze would turn down an opportunity to get back in the SEC. If not him i say go after Fickell at Cincy

With that in mind, there are two important areas Malzahn’s replacement could improve that would make a huge difference — recruiting and offense.......
As Jeffrey Lee has mentioned several times on our podcast, The Rundown, a talented assistant like Travis Williams can win a lot of recruiting battles against other assistants, but he can’t against Saban, Orgeron or Smart. He needs a head coach that’s there to back him up. Malzahn fell short in that area. AU’s next coach needs to be the commander and chief of the recruiting trail.

I think he was a good recruiter. The lack of consistent development lead to a lot of issues
We could probably start at a lot of places to end up at the roster problems but my opinion is development
