MLB - Ben McDonald (1989)

Selected 6 positions ahead of Hall of Famer Frank Thomas.

78-70 career MLB record.

Five selections ahead of Frank Thomas, the Braves selected fricking C Tyler Houston... .265 career average, 63 HR, took 7 years to make it to the majors, averaged 87 games per season in 8 ML seasons.

The Big Hurt was about the surest of sure things coming out of college. There are some fricking stupid people in the history of sports that have been in charge of running teams.

I saw where it is predicted he will get an $8.1M signing bonus.

Does anybody know him? I want to be his friend.

Well, the 8th pick, former Texas A&M and current Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray, is supposed to be getting $4.7M if he gives up football and plays baseball if reports are accurate.

So $8.1M sounds in the ballpark (heh) to me.

No, that is the slot value of the #1 overall pick this year. He will have agreed to sign for less than that amount which will allow the Tigers to go "over slot" on one of their later picks (or multiple picks). In a situation like this, there isn't much leverage for Mize to turn down say a $7.5 million offer. Why? Because its an assload of money that he'll likely never see again in the draft, and going back to school to risk injury is a stupid idea. That is why the #1 overall pick almost always ends up signing for below slot.

Dude is never gonna make the big money in football.

And if he part-times it, he ain't gonna get the big wad o'cash either.

If he was smart, he'd take the money and run. He can always give it another go in football later if he feels like baseball ain't working out.

As our loveable lush coach said, Hindsight is 50/50. It’s sure easy to chastise all those teams for passing on Frank. Ben McDonald was a bad arse in college whom also was considered a can’t miss prospect. Helped win a gold medal in 88, Struck out 202 batters in 1989 while posting a 3.49 ERA during the gorilla ball years.

My guess is he will sign the baseball contract and give up collegiate baseball. He can still play college football..............unless the Big 12 has rules against it.

Yeah, and if he part-times it like that, he's not gonna get the $4.3 million that is slotted for that position and probably won't be anywhere near it.

He probably would sign before slot regardless, lot of people didn't see Murray as a top 10 pick from what I read

I wouldn't be shocked if some of his signing bonus is tied to passing some medical evals post football or something.

They're paying him OVER slot at nearly $5 million AND they're still going to let him play football this year. Dear god.
