Gus said that he was going to use "common sense" with KJ's carries and usage against ULM.

Gus Malzahn has clearly been possessed. This is awesome.

We really need to get the other guys a lot of reps. If KJ goes down for any reason, I'd like some faith that the next guy will be on top of shite.

Notes from Bryan Matthews

quote:

** Huge win Saturday. Played our best game of the year. Felt like team seized moment. Game is over, however, and we've got to move forward.

** ULM has some players. Need to continue to get better, keep momentum. A lot of teams have fall off after big win. We can't do that. Need to maintain championship urgency.

** The OL has grown this season, playing best football right now. Got seven guys that have played well in SEC games. Feeling really good about those seven guys. Probably week to week on who starts. Still have a couple of guys banged up. Really rare how well they've performed in spite of the injuries.

** Mindset is to get better this week, not rest players. Mike Horton and Darius James will practice today. We'll see on status for game later in week.

** You try not to make the same mistake twice. Said he takes full responsibility for the LSU game. Can't let that happen again.

** Eli Stove is one of their most explosive players. Trying to build around team's strengths and Eli has gotten a lot of yards on the perimeter.

** The last four weeks have been big for Malik Willis. Has gotten almost equal reps in practice to make sure he's ready. Has gotten good game experience. His throw to McClain late was an RPO.

** Casey Dunn had a pretty serious injury against LSU. Pretty amazing how he's recovered. He's playing at a very high level.

** Kickoff coverage still a concern. Did improve but need to continue to improve. ULM has a dynamic kick returner so it's an opportunity to get better. Wind was swirling against UGA on kicks.

** Carlton Davis has stayed healthy, which really makes a difference. Was banged up last season. Now you can see what he's capable of doing. Coach Steele can call defenses like he wants because he can trust his cornerbacks.

** On TD throw to Slayton: Great read, great throw and Darius made a great adjustment on the ball and catch. Confidence on offense took off after that play.

** Jeremiah Dinson is a coach on the field. He's starting to get healthy too. Barely made it through LSU game. Knows and understands how offenses are trying to attack.

** ULM has veteran staff. Team is well coached. We need to play well and concentrate on ULM.

** It's getting cooler and Kerryon can handle more carries, probably could have carried it another 10 times against UGA. RIP Kerryon.

** "When you win it's funner." Talks about wanting to loosen up.

** Chandler Cox is usually making key blocks on every big play.

Did someone from the Auburn Sports Board possess Gus's body?

Really hoping to see a bunch of Devan Barrett. Truly believe he's AU's next elite back

Common sense says Kerryon doesn't need to carry the ball at all this weekend. Certainly should be done by the end of the 1st quarter.

Disagree. He needs to play some and get some carries. Not only for the reward but to keep him sharp.

I said during the summer that keeping Pettway out of the spring game and all the scrimmages would not be good for him. He needs the carries and contact to stay sharp and be game ready

Sitting KJ for two weeks without some game time is not good. Give him 15 carries or so early then give him a escorted ride to all the sorority houses after the game.

If he truly feels this way and remembers it moving forward, we should be in a good position. Not saying we'll beat Bama, but at least we won't be scratching our heads wondering what the hell it is we're doing.

Let KJ and Stidham play the 1st half. And then turn the full zone read offense with Willis and Martin loose in the 2nd half.

If it took losing to LSU to bring out this Gus then maybe it was worth it.

Rare, yet refreshing transparency from Gus. Maybe the LSU loss really did wake him up.

Honestly, that’s all I’ve really wanted. I deeply want to beat Bama, and I feel much better than I have in years going into the game, but It was never about the losing so much as how we were losing. If Gus can use the LSU game to grow into a solid and sustainable head coach, I’m very for it.

This.

My main reason for getting off the bus after LSU was how he appeared to respond. As I posted at the time, he said the same shite the last time they beat us in Red Stick -
"we'll get better, we know what we did wrong and we'll fix it", etc. And we saw the same patterns in LSU that we saw against Clemson in '16 and '17, UGa in '15 and '16, and so on. I had honestly given up on him having the knowledge and self-awareness to actually 'fix it'.

But the last two weeks have been refreshingly different - we played two pretty talented teams (TAMU's problem is coaching) and not only successfully reacted to their adjustments, but made solid adjustments of our own. This is something we hadn't seen out of Gustav previously, except maybe against Bama in '13.

I'm hopeful that this is the start of an upward trend in his development, at long last. We'll see.
