If Gernier is spot on in practice .....it didn't show at all in the short time he was on the actual field.

It’s quite puzzling to see a guy that has started somewhere else for 2 years look like that. Maybe him losing his starting job in the spring at MSU really killed his confidence.
They must of gave him all day to slowly look around.

Gotcha, but kind of a difficult situation coming in the end of the final minutes. Also, he hasn’t had any snaps in practice, he is playing scout QB.

He may or may not have it, which is why I say I HOPE he can do something.

Playing scout, he's running the other offense. Bad spot to insert him into.

All bets are off, defense running to kill .....

Laying it out like this. I am finding myself agreeing with you, just a little. The very least it could be possible. I guess we will see. Thorne thus far looks really bad and the defenses he will be facing aren’t going to get easier. But make no mistake I don’t think Robby makes us much better, but he quicker and faster. I am hoping Geriner steps up some how.

Playing Robby seems like you're basically conceding the future and any chance at the big games in order to overpower the weaker teams on the schedule and try and win the games you "should" win.

TBH, if Hugh were on the hot seat and needed to get to 6-7 wins to survive, I would find that pretty reasonable. Robby can't operate a complete offense sufficient to win against the better teams on the schedule and I think the staff believes that too. And nobody - coaches included - are giving much indication that they see a path to growth into a more well rounded QB for Ashford. So we're not "developing" him for anything. There is no investment element in starting Robby.

Tea leaves would indicate the staff thinks that there may still be a competent multiyear P5 starter somewhere inside Thorne, and that his finding his footing could result in us being more competitive in all games on the schedule. That reasoning would make sense to me, although obviously there is no real way of knowing if the lights are going to come on.

And similarly, the praise and references to Holden would seemingly convey that the staff thinks he has at least some viability as a development candidate - that there may be a potential return in the future for staking some games on him this season. With the lower expectations of this season, this option has a lot of appeal to many of us (assuming the coaches really do think there is considerable potential there).

Did you listen to Holden talk about Georgia on the War Rapport?

He hates Georgia now, grew up a in a family of Georgia fans and wanted them bad, until they blew him off. If hate (another thread) is a criteria he's got boat loads more the Thorne.

Yep - I’d rather have an underclassman running the “real” offense and lose an extra game than alter our offense the rest of the year to become a primarily option and triple option team.

Geriner has a nice release and poise. Scout is poor preparation so we will see what he can really do in 2 weeks if it comes to that.

With any sort of defense last season, Ashford beats LSU and uat.

How did the defense lose LSU? That was Harsin. Kelly and LSU were in meltdown mode until those gift decisions. And you're not winning in Tuscaloosa with no passing yards. A lot of drives that game were the typical quick 3 and out Robby specials that did the shitty defense no favors.

I'm pretty sure this is the main issue. No inside info, but just watching him get pressured, he looks slower than me. It's hard to run RPOs with a QB everyone knows can't run. Freeze is all about the RPO game.

Thorne has some wheels for a white guy, and this is probably one thing that made Freeze interested.

Remember Geriner was a Harsin recruit and Harsin does not do RPO. He is strictly a pro-style drop back guy. So Freeze never was a good fit for Holden.

I guess I agree with that. Ashford and the offense were humming in the first half, and they came out running something totally different in the second.

27 points is well enough to win a lot of games with a good defense. Just look at the IB the year prior.
