Marcello put out another early morning update

- A source tells BM that Gus was not in AU Sunday and it is believed was out interviewing candidates. I believe Rivals has reported he was in Atlanta interviewing Mike Yurcich but BM has not been able to corroborate that story just yet

- It is believed Mike Yurcich is a serious candidate who has shown interest. BM is not certain if they have met in person

- Apparently it's hard to tell where Mark Helfrich fits into the search right now

- Don't count out other offensive staff changes being made once a new OC is hired. Good chance new guy might want 1 or 2 of his own people on the staff. The only OC hire right now that would not result in staff change is Chip Lindsey whose name has cooled off in recent days tho one source told BM he thinks he's the best candidate

- AU has not asked for permission yet to interview USF OC Sterlin Gilbert

- The big story to track this offseason will be how Gus melds his offense with the new OC if he is indeed hired outside of Gus's coaching tree. Gus left Arkansas for Tulsa in part because he was frustrated by having to blend his offense at that time. BM though says the new OC probably will have to make the biggest adjustment as he will have to meld the two offense while keeping most of the terminology in tact

I can see that, but that was Gus having to adapt to Graham. One would assume Gus would have more influence this time.

Complete guess on my part but if we don't get Yurcich I think we end up where we start and get Chip Lindsey. It sounds good on paper to land someone with a ton of experience but it has to be hard to sell a legit OC on coming to work under Gus and meld offenses. I still have hope we are gonna land Yurcich but won't be shocked if it falls through

My rub is if my O doesn't work, or a part of it, I will look for someone who has perfected that skill, and let him do his job. It is not like we have a complex passing system already in place.

So Lindsey was all but out and now BMS sources say he could be the best fit.

It sucks that we have to hire someone willing to blend their offense with Malzahns instead of going out and getting the best candidate

with our personnel though, it'd be stupid to completely go away from the power run game. I think meshing the two systems together in the best way possible is the ideal situation.

The primary hold up is staff members. Gus wants to keep Horton, Hand and Kodi in place.

We just need to make a hire and move on. We all know Malzahn is not going to relinquish the reigns completely.

Yeah, I mean, maybe we suck at passing because they suck at coaching. New blood, different ideas, etc is sometimes needed.

Just the typical whining from the AU board in the face of uncertainty.

I get that sentiment, but this isn't a 8-10 year staff. They have been here 4 years.

Horton is one of the best RB coaches in the country.
Hand did one of the best jobs on the staff with his group this year and can recruit very well. Losing him would push Ashley away.... Same with losing Fountain (but i think we'd keep him around with the addition of a 10th staff member later this year).

Kodi is the one I wouldn't mind changing, but he's only 1 year into his new gig and it wouldn't be a good look to can him this quickly. Maybe he gets reshuffled with the new staff member too?

My resume has been sent.

I believe in running the ball and throwing the ball. Scoring a lot of points is also something I firmly believe in.

Vote for me at auburnneedsanoc.com

Thanks!

Why would an established head coach ever do this for the coordinator hire on the side of the ball where they've made their name?

I'm willing to be you can't come up with a single example.
