He really hasn't called plays since 2008. That's no joke.

Helfrich would be a bad hire.

I'm not sold on it either. When you look at it objectively he's no more proven than Chip Lindsay.

So PM has update on OC search

- It won't be a Briles, will have more experience than Lindsey & if Helfrich is out of running happened Friday

- New OC will run Malzahn's system but be asked to modernize the pass offense

- OC won't necessarily be a QB coach though that is preferred. If not a QB coach expect more staff changes

- It's expected he will run the offense & call the plays

- Stidham was disappointed Lashlee left but is at AU to stay

- Returning offensive talent makes job attractive to candidates

That's a rough summary of his update. Basically we are trying to hire an experience coordinator that runs a power spread type system but hopefully has a history developing QBs

Edit: misread comment on Helfrich

So we are setting ourselves up to fail?

Sony dykes? He has more exp than those guys. If Pat has a say, it will be Dykes, if he is interested.

Regardless, we are likely looking for a HC next year. Bill Clark will be on the radar because Pat is the man behind the curtain.

Looks like we missed on our top targets, now we are screwed. Go ahead and bring D Craig in where I can laugh and cry.

I mean that sounds exactly like what we need. Someone to run Gus's system but fix passing scheme & develop QBs. Now I don't know if that person exists or who it is but I think the goal we are trying to achieve is the right one. Will be interesting to see who that ends up being

PM also said that it could be someone not mentioned yet as some coaches do not want it leaked they are interested in a different job

Geez. Now it seems that we will be basically keeping the running plays and coming up with a totally different passing scheme to compliment it. It's a good thing Stidham has the spring to adapt and learn it.

It will be tough if they dont find a OC with QB development resume. Can't image who they would bring in to be the QB coach..if that is required...

I don't disagree

Any guy who can run a power O, good play caller, develop QBs and has extensive P5 experience as a successful OC moves to be a HC not a lateral move to another OC spot

Not sure what Auburn (SEC in general) obsession is with going for the "safe" known coach instead of taking a risk and going after stars in the making from smaller schools

Ah I get your earlier comment then. Don't think there's a guy out there that meets this criteria that will make the jump. Hard to argue that

I honestly have no idea who we end up with. I thought for sure it would be one of Helfrich, Spavital or Lindsey so very interested to see what "splash" hire we make

Yep. Chip Lindsay, Sterlin Gilbert, or Sonny Dykes are the only names out there I'd be excited about.

How anybody could get excited about Chip Lindsey blows my mind. He has done nothing of note.

We should sell out on QB development and bring in Norm Chow. Guy made a lot of money on his reputation of developing QBs

Not excited but he has been solid. Guy turned around Southern Miss and did pretty admirably at ASU despite the garbage situation he found himself in

Better than Jake Spavital

There's potential there. His Southern Miss offense put up God numbers and he had no name qbs slinging it around. He's actually more proven than Helfrich who's only season as OC away from Chip Kelly was when he led the 92nd ranked offense at Colorado and people were clamoring for him including you.

I doubt it happens, but Sterlin Gilbert has to be the best hire we can make

Just wonder if he sticks with Charlie Strong

Would love but that name hasn't been mentioned and likely won't.

Would be an easy pull if we wanted him

Depends on the contract buyout + how he feels about the situation at AU

Guy is close to being a HC even if he is at USF.
