Reading an article about Helfrich's downfall at Oregon, it seemed like there was a discipline issue much like Chizik in '12. Does this concern anyone else? It reads like the team was divided, not following conditioning standards and eventually gave up. I know Gus held the team together until White was injured in the Sugar Bowl, but surely Lashlee had to help with that, and an OC that does not would be a problem.

Wasn't a problem when he was OC at Oregon

All we need the guy to do is install an great offense where it balances pass with run and call the right plays.

I read a similar article comparing Oregon's last two seasons with our 2011-12 seasons.
I think much like he did under Chip Kelly, he would operate within Gus' SOPs and protocols, and not have the level of overall authority to impact team unity, conditioning, etc. It would not be allowed to get anywhere near that point.
We've hit the same point multiple times: we either hire somebody outside of Gus' familiarity that runs their own playbook or someone inside of it that will receive Gus' playbook and told to pick from it. I can't see someone coming in from outside the circle that will be open to 'blending' their playbook with concepts from Gus'. That would be interesting but I can't see it. I will say I am not smart enough to see how one person calls run plays (Gus playbook) and another calls passing plays (someone elses).

Could have been his lack of experience in leadership.

What don't you understand about how it makes your program look when the head coach isn't allowed to make his own decisions?
I have no problem with a consensus of our BOT and AD going to our HC (in any sport) and saying "we're unhappy with your overall job performance, we feel you need to make some changes if you want to remain in our employ." And then allow the HC an opportunity to adjust his personnel accordingly.
What would concern me is the same group going to an HC and saying "we're unhappy with your overall job performance, so fire assistant A and hire B for the job".
More than likely, the current situation is a mix of both.
TWWA.

Gus makes the decisions, but he understands that he needs someone with a different understanding of the passing game, etc. Rhett did not provide that and getting another Rhett clone is not going to fix that.
He is getting guidance, but the decision will be his and his alone. He has been getting assurance that he can go for a home run hire and he hopes to pull that out.
Gus is stubborn, loyal, etc., but he is not stupid. He knows that his offense has sucked the last two years and can not suck this year or he is done.

Only thing I would disagree with is whether Gus is allowed to hire whomever?

Compliance has veto power (No Art, Trooper, etc.)

One thing Gus has always seemed to do well is cutting cancer out of the locker room and keeping the team united. I don't have any question in his ability to that, with or without Helfrich.

I agree with most of what you said but honestly I believe if it were up to gus he would just hire Lindsey or someone else that will run his system.
The power brokers want a new systeme (as do I).
