I don’t get the Mason hate. Bobo needed to go, but the defense was the only thing keeping us in games most of the season. If there isn’t improvement next year, he should go.

Mason had one really atrociously called game and that was MSU. Rest were serviceable given our personnel, even GA State, which showed just how important Ricochet was for us.

I don't love Mason but no thanks on Diaz.

It's not an either/or... I would rather retain Mason then hire Diaz.

We've lost 4 games in a row. I'd say no one is completely safe this year or next year without showing vast improvement.

I agree. If the offense didn't go on super long droughts during games, we have a good shot to win in all of them, sans UGA.

you'd take diaz over mason??

Diaz had some damn good defenses when he was at Miss State. Mason has the worst Auburn defense since Ellis Johnson.

And the worst talent pool and depth since in a decade.

Mason made chicken salad with chicken dookie many times over this year

early in the season, I agree

The MSU game is still mytstifying.

USCe coach said they ran the same two plays the entire second half and Mason couldn't figure it out.

We blitzed bama most of the game. They hit a run or two and Mason stopped pressuring. The rest is history.

IMO, his play calling is just as bad as Bobo's, if not worse.

Well I wouldn't say having what was considered before the season started as having a top 2-3 LB core and top 1-2 defensive back group he was working with chicken shite.

He takes the new approach to slowing down spread teams. Play zone and make them march the field. Same as the NFL has gone to since TEs are so involved now in the NFL game. Corners man to man, zone everywhere else.

It's definitely not exciting defense and generally turns into who can convert in the redzone.

Wasn't a couldn't figure it out. Missed tackles. Zakoby had a horrible game by his standards. So did Wooten.

Except this defense was better than Steele's defense last year.

Comparing Mason to Johnson is nuts. We only gave up 30+ points twice all year. With Johnson, we were giving up 30 and 40 regularly.

It's even better than last year if you go by jville's favorite stat, Total Defense.

Last year when we played an all SEC schedule?

I don't think we want to start comparing last year to this year in anything. We finished 3rd in the West last year, We finished last this year.

We won twice as many conference games last year with a crappier defense lol.

Steele last year and Mason this year had mediocre results. Mason had some elite moments though. A&M, and 3 and half quarters against Bama.

Next year we find out now much we are gonna miss Zakoby and Mcreary though.

Oh shoot, great point... except it's still better even if you only factor in the conference games this year (which includes a 4OT game btw).

ETA: Actually I'll own that I got that wrong and the 4OT made it just below last year's by about half a point per game. If you only count regulation in that game then it's a full point per game better than last year.

Defense definitely looked better to me this season. We kind of dropped off Steele’s last few years.
