Sam Mongelli picked in 10th. Assuming he goes, this draft was a big hit to our MIF!

Maybe a 15% chance with McGonigle ($2.309M slot).

No, he's gone too. The Tigers will just pay him above that slot (their total pool is massive on top of saving some money by going HS OF Max Clark at #3 as opposed to UF OF Wyatt Langford). They wouldn't have drafted him there otherwise, he had a pre-draft deal - and it's very likely that the enormous price tag he was claiming was actually done to deter other teams from taking him before the Tigers' #37 pick.

Almost everyone drafted within the Top 10 rounds will sign.

Likely, that's why I put a small percentage on it.

I'm not convinced they are gonna save that much cash on Clark.

That's a pretty bold statement.

Agreed, but there are always a handful that don't. If I remember correctly, McGonigle has already enrolled. I get that doesn't mean much, but it does mean a little.

So who is Auburn allowed to keep? I don’t know why the NCAA allows this punch in the gut to teams and fans every year.

15% is too high. Only chance he doesn't sign is if he fails a medical.

Depends what you mean by "that much". Slot value at their pick is $8.34 mill. Jackson Holliday and Druw Jones signed for $8.19 and $8.189 mill a year ago as HS selections going #1 and #2 overall. Max Clark will receive less than that. Max Clark probably gets something like $7.8 mill, which places him over the slot value at the #4 pick (where he was likely to go) but still gives the Tigers ~$500K in savings.

Lets say they hypothetically save $500K on Clark; that gets them to ~$2.8 million to theoretically spend on McConigle. And that's without any other potential savings they might have with their later picks (there is likely at least one or two). My guess is that they sign McConigle for something like $3 million - which would be the slot value for the #26 pick.

It's really not. McGonigle was giving teams an alleged "Top 10 pick" price tag leading into the Draft as his price tag (so $5+ million). This is an unsignable amount because he's not worth anywhere near that amount (he is a Pick #20-30 type talent).

A kid only floats a price tag like that if he is dead-set on going to College, or if they already have an agreement in place with a team with multiple picks/a massive bonus pool which wants to game the system (eg: the Tigers). The fact that he was still drafted #37 overall should signal to you which one of those two camps he falls into. If he was for real dead-set on going ot Auburn, he wouldn't have been selected that high - simple as that.

The Tigers aren't risking a pick that high on the hopes and a prayer that a kid who is asking for $5 million can be negotiated down by several million dollars lol. The more realistic scenario is that the $5 mill number he was telling other teams was fake to get him to drop, and the Tigers actually have an agreement with him already. This scenario happens every single year.

The handful that don't sign are almost always medical-scenarios wherein the kid takes a physical and something pops up, and then the drafting team doesn't want to pay the full amount that they had originally agreed upon because of that.

I missed incoming freshman signee Bjorn Johnson getting selected in the 12th round at #362

Would have to think any of the incoming class getting selected today should be coming to campus.

Not necessarily. Depends on the amount of pool money available versus what it would take to sign the kid. Not sure he would’ve had his name called had he not planned to sign.

So barring any free agent type news, Auburn had a total of 7 (*edit-8) selected I believe. 3 from the '23 roster (that I think all still had eligibility?) and 4 (*edit-5) from the incoming class. Stings to lose the 3 infielders from the incoming class.

Drafted:
Foster - 3rd round
Ware - 8th round
Isbell - 15th round
Emerson - 1st round
McGonigle - Comp Balance Rnd A
Mongelli - 10th round
Johnson - 12th round
Watts - 18th round (*edit-added to original post)

Interested to see if Johnson signs. I know cash is king and all kids & parents situations are different but the farm system grind on the later round picks seems like it would be brutal compared to college, especially on a outgoing high school senior.

It appears that both Gonzalez and Peirce are coming back. I'd say that is welcome news.

Other posts are saying that Mongelli is close to signing with Dodgers.

Larue signed a FA deal with Blue Jays.

I would look for the last two signees Johnson and Watts to come to school.

Johnson might see an 80-100K offer but that isn't life changing money compared to 3 years of schools at least.

I expect Mongelli to sign based on the fact we got a commit from JSU 2nd baseman
